Scott #15, 18 [1867 "8 SKILL 8" Coat of Arms; 1872 3 skilling Posthorn] (Ave/VF) neatly tied by a single strike of a CHRISTIANIA 30 August 1872 cancellation (with another matching strike to the side) complete folded cover (no contents) sent by "G. Kienitz" to LANGNAU, SWITZERLAND. The reverse shows the expected transit postmarks via KIEL and HAMBURG, Germany, on 2 September, and via BURGDORF, Switzerland, on 3 September, arriving in LANGNAU on 4 September. The total 11 skilling franking fully paid the postage to the final destination. On the front are two postal accountancy markings: Red "2 1/2" for the Silbergroschen share of the original postage amount that is to be credited to the German postal system (which included the subsequent Swiss fraction). The final marking is a blue "1/4" Silbergroschen (which was equivalent to 1 Kreuzer, the currency used by the Swiss system), which represents the Swiss credit for the final delivery, to be taken from the German 2 1/2 Silbergroschen amount. Both stamps are fresh and bright with strong colors (especially the remarkable Dark Carmine of the 3 skilling Posthorn on Bluish Paper, Facit #18a), with excellent perforations. Though the stamps are fairly close to the edge of the cover, they are completely sound and without any wear or defects . The cover has the expected filing fold, which is far away from the stamps. This 11 skilling single rate to Switzerland is recorded in the NK 2014 brevregister with uses in 1872-1873. While this use is not a "rare" rate and destination, in my experience early covers from Norway to Switzerland are remarkably unusual, with a majority of the rates and frankings recorded only in 1 or 2 examples. An outstanding example in remarkably nice quality! An excellent cover for a collection of Coat of Arms and/or Skilling Posthorn stamps and covers, or for a Postal Rate and Destination collection.
