NATO 1961 April 18 metered LARGE PIECE with KOLSÅS NATO-text meter imprint (license 382) in the amount of 355 øre which would correctly the 30 gram airmail rate to the U.S.: World surface letter rate 90 øre (1 April 1959 thru 31 March 1970) plus 55 øre for the second weight step (20-40 grams), plus the surcharge to the U.S. of 35 øre for each 5 grams [30 grams would be six airmail weight steps] (1 August 1953 thru 30 June 1971, when the airmail surcharge on lightweight items ended). Cut from a yellowish brown large envelope. Based on the complete envelopes that this accompanied, this was sent to the Army Map Service in Washington, D.C.. NATO 1962 March 22 (Thursday) metered cover, airmail to the U.S. KOLSÅS 26 March cancellation struck over the meter imprint date to RE-DATE the cover to Monday the 26th. Though it does not always occur, this re-dating was the correct procedure for mail which was meter-imprinted by the mailer, but was not actually received by the post office until the date of the re-dating. In 53 years, I can only recall having two or three other Scandinavian metered covers with such re-dating postmarks. NATO 1962 June 6 metered cover, airmail to the U.S. with KOLSÅS NATO-text meter imprint (license 382) paying the 125 øre 5 gram airmail rate to the U.S. However, the cover must have actually weighed 5-10 grams, thus an additional 35 øre stamp, Scott # 361A [1960 brownish carmine 35 øre King Olav V] was applied and canceled at KOLSÅS on the same day. Such up-franking of Norwegian metered covers is very seldom encountered -- either the mailers usually got the rate correct the first time or the post office did not check very often or insist on payment for the extra postage.
