Norway: Covers: Nordkapp / Nordkap / North Cape Covers

Nordkapp (the Norwegian spelling) [also North Cape, Nordkap, Le Cap Nord] is often stated to be the northern-most point of "mainland" Europe, however, that mainlaind title actually belongs to Kinnarodden (Cape Nordkinn) located about 5.7 km south and about 70 km east, because Nordkapp is located on an island. Nordkapp has been a very popular tourist ship destination since the second half of the 1800s, resulting in a large amount of cards and letters being mailed from this otherwise extremely isolated Arctic location. There has been a NORDKAPP postmark used at this location since at least 1897 (applied to mail then carried away by tourist ships) and an actual post office since at least 1928. Tourist ships often stopped at Nordkapp during farther north transit to/from Spitzbergen / Svalvard. Elaborate, illustrated ship mail envelopes / cards were created in the late 1800s, followed by a tremendous variety of picture post cards that were available on the tourist ships and eventually in the tourist facilities at Nordkapp. The postmarks, both handstamped and machine, evoloved to include images of the Midnight Sun, the seaside cliff, and the latitude and longitude. The are multiple types of some of the postmarks; compare closely to find small differences in details, spacing, etc. There are also ship-route postmarks (such as "TRONDHEIM - KIRKENES") that include "NORDKAPP" text and/or images. Additionally, there is a variety of non-postal "cachet" handstamps of various types used at the location and on board ships. Norwegian semi-postal stamps picturing Nordkapp were first issued in 1930; smaller-format stamps of similar design were also issued in 1938, 1943, 1953, and 1957. All of the Nordkapp stamps can be found with various Nordkapp postmarks. Nordkapp is also pictured on a few labels and on Hammerfest local post (bypost) stamps (inquire if you are seeking them).

Scott #360 [1958 25 øre emerald green Olav V] (VF) solo use on tourist picture post card (Hammerfest area midnight sun) to Sweden. The dating and cancellations on this card are a odd. The stamp has a town cancellation "LØN.....L" (In the 1969 handbook, the only LØN... town/village name is LONNINGDAL, but that seems a bit long for this postmark device) dated 12 July 1961 and there is a NORDKAPP pictorial handstamped side postmark (slightly doubled) that appears to be dated 15 July 1961. Multiple types of this Nordkapp postmark exist; compare carefully. I cannot explain why the card bears two very difference cancellations -- and if one of them is Lonningdal, that is 2240 km road distance from Nordkapp! I hope somebody will find the answer to this puzzle. Correct 25 øre franking for Nordic post card rate (1 Jan 1956 - 30 June 1962). Even though Sweden is right next door, Nordkapp covers and cards to Sweden are remarkably unusual; I was lucky to obtain a small group from a collection built in Sweden.

Scott #B60 [1957 35+10 øre carmine Nordkapp semi-postal] (VF) solo use on 3 July 1962 tourist picture post card (Nordkapp visitor hall during midnight sun) sent to Sweden. NORDKAPP illustrated handstamped cancellation; VF strike on stamp. Multiple types of this postmark exist; compare carefully. Correct 35 øre franking for Nordic post card rate (1 July 1962 - 15 Nov 1964). Used on the THIRD DAY OF THIS POSTAL RATE. Even though Sweden is right next door, Nordkapp covers and cards to Sweden are remarkably unusual; I was lucky to obtain a small group from a collection built in Sweden. This stamp is hard to find as a correct, non-philatelic solo use on cover or card and especially for the Nordic post card rate. The single used stamp itself is a somewhat scarce stamp; it has a 2025 Scott value of $7.50. Very attractive example.

Multiple types of this Nordkapp postmark exist; compare carefully. Correct 2.50 kr franking for Norden A-Post rate (1 Oct 1984 - 28 Feb 1987; a specific post card rate ceased to exist as of 1 Oct 1984). Even though Sweden is right next door, Nordkapp covers and cards to Sweden are remarkably unusual; I was lucky to obtain a small group from a collection built in Sweden. This stamp is hard to find on cover and is quite sought after by topical collectors of sports, winter sports, shooting, Olympics, etc.
