UPDATED 2026 July 21

Over the last few days, you may have encountered problems accessing our website. I am sorry for the problems. As I had announced, our website hosting company was migrating our website to new servers. We thought the migration was successful and I did not expect any problems, but the website hosting company had misconfigured the server running our website, causing significant disruptions to our website serving (but depending upon the load on the server). The website hosting company now believes that the problem has been corrected. I have tested for more than a day now and I have not encountered any problems.

However, if you are visiting our website for the first time since BEFORE July 14, it is possible you could INITIALLY encounter a problem because the website was moved to a new IP address. IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY PROBLEMS VIEWING A PAGE (OR IMAGES), FIRST "reload / refresh" the web page by clicking / pressing the browser reload/refresh button WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD. If that does not immediately solve the problem, try again every few minutes. If the problem remains after 30 minutes, please let me know by email at js@JaySmith.com or by calling me at 336-376-9991. I am sorry for any inconvenience.

Scott #360 [1958 25 øre emerald green Olav V] (VF) solo use on tourist picture post card (Hammerfest area midnight sun) to Sweden. The dating and cancellations on this card are a odd. The stamp has a town cancellation "LØN.....L" (In the 1969 handbook, the only LØN... town/village name is LONNINGDAL, but that seems a bit long for this postmark device) dated 12 July 1961 and there is a NORDKAPP pictorial handstamped side postmark (slightly doubled) that appears to be dated 15 July 1961. Multiple types of this Nordkapp postmark exist; compare carefully. I cannot explain why the card bears two very difference cancellations -- and if one of them is Lonningdal, that is 2240 km road distance from Nordkapp! I hope somebody will find the answer to this puzzle. Correct 25 øre franking for Nordic post card rate (1 Jan 1956 - 30 June 1962). Even though Sweden is right next door, Nordkapp covers and cards to Sweden are remarkably unusual; I was lucky to obtain a small group from a collection built in Sweden.

NATO 1962 June 6 metered cover, airmail to the U.S. with KOLSÅS NATO-text meter imprint (license 382) paying the 125 øre 5 gram airmail rate to the U.S. However, the cover must have actually weighed 5-10 grams, thus an additional 35 øre stamp, Scott # 361A [1960 brownish carmine 35 øre King Olav V] was applied and canceled at KOLSÅS on the same day. Such up-franking of Norwegian metered covers is very seldom encountered -- either the mailers usually got the rate correct the first time or the post office did not check very often or insist on payment for the extra postage. The world surface letter rate 90 øre (1 April 1959 thru 31 March 1970) plus surcharge to the U.S. 35 øre for each 5 grams (1 August 1953 thru 30 June 1971, when the airmail surcharge on lightweight items ended). Official NATO envelope (GRAYISH WOVEN PRIVACY DESIGN INSIDE) with lightweight return address font, sent from "HEADQUARTERS / ALLIED FORCES NORTHERN EUROPE / KOLSÅS, NORWAY". Sent to the Army Map Service in Washington, D.C. No markings on the reverse. Though such covers are seldom seen, this came from a group of early 1960s covers all sent to the Army Map Service from countries around the world. Eight of these Norwegian NATO metered covers were in the group. There were two different types of envelopes (differences in the privacy printing on the inside and the return address font). Of the eight covers, one had an additional postal cancel re-dating the cover and another had an added stamp, canceled locally, because the meter amount was not high enough for the weight. Seven of the eight covers had 160 øre franking for 10 grams; the eighth had 125 øre for 5 grams. In my experience these Norwegian NATO covers are rarely offered. Around 2000, I had two or three examples generally similar to this (but not with an additional stamp); they sold quickly for around $30 each. Very fresh and attractive and very neatly opened.
