Recent E-News Editions

Some folks don't successfully receive, or perhaps read, every edition of the E-News. In case you missed it, the last edition is posted at:

https://www.JaySmith.com/Enews/2008-02-21_E-News.html

That edition offered an important range of Greenland, Iceland, Canal Zone and Canada stamps. It provided links to new downloadable printed and postal mailed price lists. It discussed year books and provided information on the new Finnish LAPE Specialized Catalog and a new book on Danish postal rates. It offered examples of one of Linn's Tip of the Week items and it discussed virtually unknown recent Finnish stamp varieties. There was also a range of specials offered: albums, collections, and books.

To see the full list of E-News that have been posted, go to the E-News Table of Contents page.

The Website is Growing

There are now 1544 pages on the website. That may sound overwhelming, but the navigation from area to area and within sections seems to work well; at least nobody is telling me differently. If you have comments about navigating around the website, or any suggestions for website improvements, please do not hesitate to let me know.

3.  Special Offers: Collections & Albums -- Great Buys Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

I am constantly buying large and small Scandinavian, U.S., and Worldwide collections. If you are considering getting into a new area and would like a "starter collection" (whether small or large), let me know about your interest. Also, if you are seeking used binders or used empty albums to match what you currently have, again, let me know. In the process of buying Scandinavian collections, many of my long-time clients (or their estates) ask that I assist in selling the non-Scandinavian portion of their collections. If there is something you are looking for, just let me know. Take a look at the current listings on the web site (but if you don't see your interest listed, please inquire -- most have not been listed on the web site yet).

I guarantee your satisfaction. Each item is one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of your check or money order if you prefer.

#731458   Denmark Collection 1854-1979
About 470 different mostly used, plus a few both mint and used, on Scott Specialty 2-post album pages. Useful range of older and newer issues including a fair number of medium to better values. Condition varies (some faults in 19th Century as to be expected), but vast majority sound and F-VF or better with later issues mostly VF. Scott 2008 retail will be well over $1250 (plus O1, O3 / $290 not counted), which should make our price look rather attractive! $245.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731459   Sweden Used Collection on Scott Pages 1855-1936
Between 2//263, 194 different used in neat black stamp mounts on Scott Specialty 2-post album pages. This contains well over 2/3 of all the stamps in this time period including #2, 6-12, etc. While this contains many better items, condition varies from nice-looking earlies with faults (mostly minor) to many sound and Fine or better. There are also a couple that quality as spacefillers (such as #9, $225) which are NOT counted in the catalog value. Scott 2008 retail is $1322 (plus those not counted). Here is an opportunity to fill in a large part of the early issues at a very affordable price! $195.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731460   Sweden Mint Collection on Scott Pages 1938-1976
Collection of 583 different mint between 286//1192 in neat black stamp mounts on Scott Specialty 2-post album pages. This contains about 75% of all the commemoratives and regular issues of this time period, including numerous complete sets. We note only a very few minor condition problems with nearly all sound, lightly hinged, F-VF or better with vast majority VF. Scott 2008 retail is $617.45. With this lot you can fill in a large part of this middle period at one time while saving significantly! $195.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731461   Sweden Mint/NH Collection on Scott Pages 1977-2002
Between 1195//2449, about 590 different mint in neat stamp mounts on Scott Specialty 2-post album pages. Nice showing of both regular and commemorative issues, mostly in complete sets. Many se-tenant pairs, blocks, and strips. Condition is fresh and clean, OG, nearly all NH (you may find a very few very lightly hinged in the earlier years). Uniformly VF. We estimate the retail prices of this collection will total well over $700 (face value is over 2300 SKR = over $360 [3/08]). Here is a chance to fill a lot of spaces at a significant savings! $450.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731462   Sweden Back-of-Book Collection 1874-1930
Between B1/36, C1/7, J1/22, O1/55, and Q1-2. Collection of 101 different used, older back-of-book issues on Scott 2-post Specialty pages with neat black stamp mounts. A strong showing including several complete sets (B22-36, C1-3, O12-55, etc.). Condition varies from some minor faults (plus a couple defective not counted in catalog value) to majority sound and many fine or better. Scott 2008 retail is $1134.15 (plus $132.50 more not counted). Here is an opportunity to fill in more than 2/3 of the back-of-book issues at a very modest cost! $249.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

WORLDWIDE COLLECTIONS

For more, see: U.S. and Worldwide Collections

#731465   United States First Day Cover Collection 1977-1980
100-cover FDC album (black, soft cover portfolio style, clear plastic pockets each holds two covers), nearly full of covers -- perhaps 95 covers? Mostly addressed, uncacheted FDCs, but also a few covers related to railways (with special postmarks), Lindbergh. Wide variety of 1977-80 stamp issues. The cover album itself is virtually worth this very low price! Give the covers to kids to get them started collecting and keep the album for yourself! $17.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731466   United States First Day Cover Collection 1982-1986 Gold Foil Replicas
Handsome, large cover album containing 34 Postal Commemorative Society FDCs having gold foil replica stamps as the cachet. Each cover is accompanied by an informational card. The replicas could even be removed from the covers and used to make pins, etc. (those sell for a lot!). There are three 1982 State Bird/Flower covers, otherwise all 1985-86 issues. Highlights include 1985 Horses set (I have seen this set fetch $25 to horse owners) and the 1986 Fish set (fishermen love this one). Additional to the 34 are five gold foil replica covers for the Inverted Jenny (!), 4 cent Columbian (2), and U.S. #1 (2). No matter how you look at this or what you do with it, there is great opportunity here -- most of the replicas are probably worth more off the covers than on. The original purchase price must have been huge (probably $5.99 or $9.99 per cover! Total of 38 items plus the album at an absurdly low price. $30.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731467   United States First Day Cover Collection 1970-1983 ELLIS ANIMATED CACHETS (3 Volumes)
Tremendous collection in three volumes. Ellis Animated Cachets are humorous, cartoon-like, hand-colored. They are scarce and seldom offered. Offerings of these cachets on the Internet are few and far between, and then usually just a few here and there. This is a comprehensive 1970-1983 collection of approximately 452 covers, including many scarce, in demand, and thematic issues. The total individual value if sold separately is in the area of $2200++!! Whether you already collect cachet makers, or want to get started in FDCs, or you are an eBayer who wants to triple or quadruple your money, this is a terrific opportunity! [Sample scans on request to serious inquirers.] $879.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731457   Czechoslovakia-Bohemia and Moravia 1939-1944
Collection lightly hinged on Scott quadrille 2-post pages, starting at #20. Missing #42 and #50, otherwise complete through regular issues and semi-postals. Condition is F-VF or better with most VF. Scott 2008 retail $26.65. Fresh and attractive! $17.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731463   Scott 2-Post 2-Inch Specialty Binder (Scandinavia Stamped)
2-inch, 2-post Scott Specialty binder with attractive gold foil stamping "SCANDINAVIA / FINLAND", but that could be covered with a label or a jacket. The binding (the hinged parts that open and close where the covers meet the spine) is very well-used and worn (from being used a lot without enough pages in it). This one will work fine if it is full of pages or to store pages, but is not the one to get if you want to carry it around a lot to the stamp club meeting if it is not full of pages. That being said, it still has a lot of life left in it and is attractive. $18.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731464   Scott 2-Post 3.5-Inch Specialty Binder
3.5-inch, 2-post Scott Specialty binder. An unattractive label has been put on the spine and a country name scrawled in white on the front cover, thus this would have to be covered with a jacket (but many people do that anyway). While this is an older binder, the binding is strong and secure and it will be useful for many years to come. This size can be quite hard to find. $18.00

4.  Used and One-of-a-kind Philatelic Literature Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

Most of these books are one-of-a-kind, thus be sure to order early. This is just a tiny glimpse of the used books available. Please take a look at the complete Literature Specials price list -- it has much more to offer. I welcome your want list for any Scandinavian books you are seeking. "New" books will be in brand-new condition. "Used" books will be used, though in attractive and serviceable condition; these books may contain minor owner's marks and have typical wear, but any significant defects will be noted in the description. Most "used" books are in much better condition than you might think; many are pristine.

#731468   Islands Frimerker - En Kortfattet Oversikt
(Carl A. Pihl, 1946) An overview of Icelandic stamps and philately. Reprint (outprint) #3 from Norsk Filatelistisk Tidsskrift magazine, card bound, 27 pages. In Norwegian, well illustrated. Pihl is perhaps most well known for his work on Norwegian locals, but he had many interests. This was probably serialized in the magazine and then published all together in this form. The content is remarkably sophisticated, detailed, and specialized for the day. As an early post-WWII publication, this is extremely scarce; I believe it is only the second copy I have had (the other is in my library). Pristine condition except for a minor stain in the margin of second half of the pages. $35.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731470   De Norske Poststempler i tiden 1845-1854 -- "The Pre-Philately Catalog"
(T. Ahlström and F.C. Moldenhauer, jr, 1965) Comprehensive, well-illustrated catalog / handbook of the pre-philatelic postmarks of Norway. A reprint (outprint) from Norsk Filatelistisk Tidsskrift magazine, where it had probably been serialized. Paper cover, 64 pages, In Norwegian. NUMBERED 291 of 300 copies. Extremely scarce book; I believe it is only the second copy I have had (the other is in my library). Absolutely pristine condition. $39.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731469   Katalog of Norwegian Postal Stationery (1955)
(Katalog over Norges Helpost) Originally published in 1950 by T. Soot-Ryen (with B. Hauge, Carl A. Pihl, and S. Sanness), this 1955 edition has been updated by Carl A. Pihl (of local post fame). In Norwegian and in the same style and format as the Norwegian stationery catalogs published up to the 1990s. This copy happens to be an "error": the contents are bound upside down relative to the cover -- if it were a stamp it would be a rarity! This book (even upright) is extremely scarce; I believe it is only the second copy I have had (the other is in my library). Pristine condition. $28.00
