United States: Bargains: Stamps Scott #40-78

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but may have hidden flaws. Some have no defects at all, but the price is lower simply because of the centering. Unlike some dealers who might not pay attention to and lower the price for such situations, I describe the stamps completely and I set prices accordingly. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for about the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all these stamps can be available for viewing on approval. Regardless, you may always return stamps if you are not completely satisfied. If you are seeking any other U.S. stamps of this quality and price level, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott #63 Blue [1861 1c Blue Franklin, without grill] Mint, without gum, with VF centering. One shorter perf tooth (typical), but otherwise extremely nice. Very crisp engraving. In my opinion, probably the best classic American stamp design. (Scott 2021 $100 for no gum.)

Very fresh and bright appearance. The delicate color helps show the detailed engraving. (Scott Specialized 2024 value $125.)

Scott #69 [1861 12c black Washington, without grill] Used with Average centering and light cancellation, but some top perfs clipped (not unusual on this stamp) and a couple short perforation teeth. Otherwise, no other defects. Much of the original gum even remains in case you wish to see what original gum looks like on this issue. A reasonable space filler. (Scott 2022 $95.)

Scott #71 [1861 30c orange Franklin, without grill] Mint, expertly regummed, lightly hinged, with Average centering. Bright color and perfect perforations. A fresh and attractive example of an unused stamp that lost its gum -- examples still with gum are very scarce. No defects or problems other than the regumming. Despite the money somebody spent to add gum to this stamp, I value it as a no-gum example. (Scott 2022 $950 for no gum; for comparison, $2600 with original gum.)

Excellent, full RED grid cancellation. A handsome example of a stamp that is very scarce without defects, at a very reasonable price. (Scott 2023 $250, plus $45 for the red cancellation.) In my experience, attractive examples of this stamp are undervalued, especially those with such great color!

Scott #76 [1863 5c brown Jefferson, No Grill] Mint, regummed, with VF centering. This example has very nice appearance for this small-margined issue (of which Scott makes a note). The color leans toward the reddish side of the spectrum, and in 1984 a U.S. specialist dealer sold it as the scarcer, higher-value #75 Red Brown, but I still consider this to be Brown, #76. Very attractive with wonderful color! (Scott 2021 value $550 for no gum, to which status it would revert if soaked.)

Scott #76 Dark Brown [1863 5c brown Jefferson, without grill] Used with Average centering (shows small parts of two adjacent stamps). The paper has some slight overall aging (it is 158 years old), but it is completely sound without defects. Price properly for the centering. (Scott 2022 value $140 for Dark Brown.)

Scott #77 [1866 15c black Lincoln, Perforation 12, No Grill] Mint, without gum, with VF centering. Very fresh appearance and remarkably well centered. There is a tiny tear at left (you will probably need a magnifying glass to see it) and there is one rounded corner perforation. This is quite a handsome example of a stamp that is "rare" in unused condition. (Scott 2025 value is $3000 for no gum!!! and $8000 with gum.)

Scott #(78/78b) Bluish Gray [1866 24c "lilac" Washington, without grill] Used with VF centering and nice, large margins, but with thin spot. Unusually light target cancellation to one side, leaving Washington "face free". Though Scott does not list a bluish gray color, the R.H. White color "bible" of classic U.S. stamps does recognize the color. (Many worldwide classic lilac or violet stamps underwent color changes due to chemical reactions within the ink as it dried. A well-known example is Sweden Scott #15, originally printed in reddish violet, but which became gray overnight when the ink dried. The color of this particular example of #78/78b is almost identical to the final color of Sweden #15!) Despite the small thin, this is a very handsome example of a stamp that is hard to find with such nice appearance. (Scott 2022 value $400 for the most common color.)
