United States: Bargains: Stamps Scott #285-299

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but may have hidden flaws. Some have no defects at all, but the price is lower simply because of the centering. Unlike some dealers who might not pay attention to and lower the price for such situations, I describe the stamps completely and I set prices accordingly. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for about the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all these stamps can be available for viewing on approval. Regardless, you may always return stamps if you are not completely satisfied. If you are seeking any other U.S. stamps of this quality and price level, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott #286 Light Copper Red [1898 2c Trans-Mississippi, Farming in the West] Mint hinged with Barely Fine centering and "perfect" perforations. Extremely detailed engraving impression further enhanced by the lightness of the ink color. As a result, there is clear definition of the details even in the darkest areas of the design. An attractive example at a low price. (Scott 2026 value $25.)

Scott #287 Brilliant Orange [1898 4c orange Trans-Mississippi, Indian Hunting Buffalo] Mint with Average centering, but one pulled perf and couple short perfs at bottom. Very fresh appearance with brilliant color! Very low price! (Scott 2023 $110.)

Scott #288 Dark Blue [1898 5c blue Trans-Mississippi, Freemont on Mountain] Used with Fine+ centering, but some aging on back. Perforated four sides example with horizontal guideline at top, from row 6, in columns 1-4 and 7-10, of the printer sheet of 100. The printer sheets of 100 were vertically divided (straight edges), between columns 5 and 6, into panes of 50. 10 stamps (two of which are the additional positions with a straight-edge) out of every 100 stamps (10%) originally had the guideline at top (and 10 stamps at bottom), but many of those have been lost to time. The guideline examples that also have a straight edge on one side are additional collectible positions. All the guidelines terminate in the sheet margins with an arrow. I believe collecting such stamps (which have become scarce over time due to being discarded or being reperforated) could be a challenging and enjoyable endeavor. (Scott 2023 $25 for normal example.)

Scott #294 [1901 1c green and black Pan-American, Steamer] Mint with F-VF centering, but hinge remnant and a crease that is about to develop into a tear. Despite the defect, it is a very pretty example with extremely deep green color and a crisp, detailed, proof-like engraving impression. Priced only at the cost of listing it on the website. (Scott 2026 value $17.)

Scott #296 [1901 4c red brown and black Pan-American, Electric Automobile] Mint with VF centering, but heavy hinge remnant. A reasonable looking example of the first stamp in the world to picture an automobile -- electric at that!! -- specifically a "Baltimore and Ohio Railroad electric taxi" passing the U.S. Capitol building, based on a promotional poster image. (Scott 2026 value is $70.)

Scott #297 [1901 5c ultramarine and black Pan-American, Niagara Railway Bridge] Mint, hinge remnant, with Fine centering. Wonderfully fresh ultramarine color with a very detailed engraving impression. The watermark is the complete double-line "S" in reverse (wrong-reading). The "bridge" is specifically the Niagara Cantilever Bridge. Built in 1883, the bridge was primarily an international railway bridge used by the Michigan Central Railroad. The tracks were also utilized by the electric trolley cars of the Niagara Gorge Railroad "Great Gorge Route". If you look very closely at the stamp, you will see that there are two trolley cars on the bridge! This is an important early RAILWAY TOPICAL stamp that is not yet known as such by many collectors. (Scott 2026 value is $75.)

Scott #298 [1901 8c brown violet and black Pan-American, Canal Locks] Mint with XF or XF-Superb centering and unusually large margins. Original gum, but hinge remnant and album page adhesions. The front is wonderfully fresh looking with nearly perfect centering -- on the front this is certainly one of the nicest-looking examples I have had in 48 years. A great classic ships topical design showing four different types of ships! This centering is quite scarce as demonstrated by the high Scott graded values for XF and XF-Superb, but those cannot apply to a this stamp because of the gum condition. (Scott 2026 value $90 for VF centering.)

A very interesting example with a network of horizontal pre-printing paper folds across the bottom (generally in the area of "POSTAGE EIGHT CENTS"). This type of variety is not often seen on the 1901 Pan-American stamps. No defects -- it is just lacking gum. A great classic ships topical design showing four different types of ships! Scott #298 [1901 8c brown violet and black Pan-American, Canal Locks] Mint with F-VF centering, but with heavy hinge remnant and a deeply pulled perforation at top center. The stamp image shows four kinds of large boats -- a nice SHIP TOPICAL in the canal locks at Sault de Ste Marie, at the border between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. Because of the defect, this example is priced very low, but is still an attractive space filler of an otherwise costly stamp. (Scott 2026 value is $90.)
