United States: Bargains: Stamps Scott #156-181

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but may have hidden flaws. Some have no defects at all, but the price is lower simply because of the centering. Unlike some dealers who might not pay attention to and lower the price for such situations, I describe the stamps completely and I set prices accordingly. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for about the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all these stamps can be available for viewing on approval. Regardless, you may always return stamps if you are not completely satisfied. If you are seeking any other U.S. stamps of this quality and price level, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott #157 [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Mint, disturbed original gum from hinge removal, with Fine centering. This is the dark brown color shade strikingly intense color. One short perforation on left at top. A very attractive and fresh-looking example of a stamp that is quite scarce in Mint condition. (Scott 2022 value $325.)

Scott #159 [1873 6c dull pink Lincoln, Continental Bank Note, Thin Hard Paper] Mint with Fine centering, but expertly regummed and with a crease. A very sharp looking example at a very low price. (Scott 2023 $375 for Mint OG and $120 for Mint No Gum, with normal centering.)

Scott #163 [1873 15c yellow orange Webster, Continental (with secret mark), No Grill] Used with F-VF centering and large margins (part of sheet margin marking shows at top), but with one nibbed corner perforation. Nice carved crossroads cancellation. A very low-priced example of a scarce stamp. (Scott 2025 value $160.)

Scott #165 Gray Black [1873 (1874) 30c gray black Alexander Hamilton, Continental Banknote printing] Used with XF appearance, but reperforated at bottom. Very neat, light, and attractive segmented carved cancellation that leave the portrait visible. Great centering, great color, great overall appearance. No other defects of any other kind. Seldom seen so nice, even though reperforated. (Scott 2022 Gray Black value $140.)

An unusually nice and clean looking example, with fresh appearance, of a scarcer stamp. (Scott 2022 Greenish Black value $135.)

Scott #166 Bright Rose Carmine [1873 90c rose carmine Perry, Continental Printing] Used with F-VF+ centering and wonderful color, but with one shorter perf (at top) and small tear on right side near bottom. Neat cancellation (part of a duplex; duplex cancels are less often seen on this stamp). One of the nicer looking examples I have seen in a while. Many examples on the market, whether described as such or not, seem to have faults. A great looking example at a very reasonable price. (Scott 2022 $300.)

Scott #166 PALE ROSE CARMINE [1873 90c rose carmine Perry, Continental Printing] A distinctive color shade listed by Scott. Used with Fine centering, moderate cancellation. A VERY TALL stamp, significantly taller than usual and showing part of the stamp above it. Some perforation holes on the sides may have been improved, and has a small natural paper inclusion in the top margin. A nice looking example of a scarce stamp. This Scott-listed shade is priced the same as the standard color, but seems to be scarcer. Many examples on the market, whether described as such or not, seem to have faults and/or repairs. Scott #179 Rich Blue [1875 5c blue Taylor, Continental Printing, Hard Paper] Mint with Average centering, but with hinge remnants and disturbed gum (but I believe the gum to be original). Rich color and attractive appearance. Mint examples of this stamp are quite scarce. (Scott 2023 $700.)
