United States: Bargains: Stamps Scott #230-245

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but may have hidden flaws. Some have no defects at all, but the price is lower simply because of the centering. Unlike some dealers who might not pay attention to and lower the price for such situations, I describe the stamps completely and I set prices accordingly. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for about the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all these stamps can be available for viewing on approval. Regardless, you may always return stamps if you are not completely satisfied. If you are seeking any other U.S. stamps of this quality and price level, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott #230 Blue [1893 1c blue Columbus in Sight of Land] NEVER HINGED, original gum, with VF centering. This example has a faint natural internal stress crease in the top margin (only faintly visible from the back unless using a 10x magnifier). The color is actually a fairly dark blue, but the inking is very light, resulting in a really remarkable crisp and detailed proof-like engraving impression. Due to the extremely high level of design detail, this is one of the nicest looking NH examples I have had in quite some time. (Scott Specialized 2026 NH value $32.50.)

Very intense, "lively" color (not the usually dull blue color shade.) Overall fresh and attractive. (Scott Specialized 2026 NH value $32.50.)

Scott #230 Grayish Blue [1893 1c blue Columbus in Sight of Land] Mint, original gum, lightly hinged, with Fine centering. The color shade of this example is fairly unusual, mostly without any greenish component -- but not quite ultramarine either. Slightly irregular perforations at top, but a tall stamp with oversized top and bottom margins. (Scott Specialized 2026 value $14.)

Scott #233 [1893 4c ultramarine Fleet of Columbus] Mint, REGUMMED, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. The regumming appears to have been done very long ago, but it was an expert job. Terrific bright ultramarine color with a detailed engraving impression. I admit to enjoying sailing ship paintings, but in my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful of the early U.S. pictorial stamp designs. Priced very low because of the regumming, but still a beautiful example. (Scott 2026 value is $55 for OG.)

Scott #233 [1893 4c ultramarine Fleet of Columbus] Mint, REGUMMED, with F-VF centering, but the paper is significantly aged (brownish in color). The regumming appears to have been done very long ago and somehow the regumming treatment likely accelerated the paper aging. Priced extremely low. (Scott 2026 value is $55 for OG.)

Scott #233 [1893 4c ultramarine Fleet of Columbus] Mint, original gum, lightly hinged, with Fine centering, but the paper has aged (slightly yellowed). There are no other indications of aging, just the slight change in paper. With a detailed engraving impression and "perfect" perforations. I admit to enjoying sailing ship paintings, but in my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful of the early U.S. pictorial stamp designs. Priced very low because of the aging, but still an attractive example. (Scott 2026 value is $55.)

Scott #235 [1893 6c purple Columbus Welcomed at Barcelona] Mint, Original Gum, hinged, with centering that looks F-VF. However, the stamp is slightly too narrow; it has been expertly reperforated. If it were not for being slightly too narrow, I think many collectors and dealers would not detect the reperforating (the previous owner did not!). Wonderfully fresh and bright color with an extremely crisp and detailed engraving impression. A very attractive example, but at a very low price. (Scott 2026 value $55.) Though this Mint stamp has the same or similar catalog value as the 4c, 5c, and 8c, in my experience it is harder to find nice examples of the 6c than of the others.

Scott #235 [1893 6c purple Columbus Welcomed at Barcelona] Mint, Original Gum, hinged, with centering that looks Fine, however the stamp has been expertly reperforated on the right side. Also, the gum appears to be slightly disturbed -- it may be regummed, but I suspect that it is just disturbed from being removed from an album page. I think many collectors and dealers would not detect the reperforating (the previous owner did not!). An attractive example with unusually pale color. Very low price. (Scott 2026 value $55.) Though this Mint stamp has the same or similar catalog value as the 4c, 5c, and 8c, in my experience it is harder to find nice examples of the 6c than of the others.

Right two stamps share one small hinge that sensibly reinforces the perforations at the edge. Bottom margin example with natural straight edge at bottom, from the bottom row of the upper pane of 100 from the printer sheet of 200. The 1-cent through $2-dollar Columbians were printed in sheets of 200 which were divided horizontally into two panes of 100 for sale at post offices. 10 stamps out of every 200 stamps (5%) originally had this straight-edge at top and 5% had this straight-edge at bottom. Despite the respectively each 5% of production, examples with a top or bottom straight edge are now quite hard to find because most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge. I think that collecting the guideline and straight edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Wonderfully fresh; came from a collection that had not seen the light of day in at least 60 years. This block is seldom offered and certainly not at such a low price! (Scott 2021 $375 [for VF] as the four singles.)

Scott #237 Black Brown [1893 10c Columbus Presenting Natives] Mint, original gum, hinged, with Fine centering, but with gum disturbance that also affects three perforation teeth on the front at top (you may need a magnifier to see). An unusually nice looking example of the main-number Scott-listed color, but with light inking that results in a remarkably crisp and proof-like engraving impression that shows the extremely fine details of the engraving even in the darkest areas of the design. An attractive example of this hard-to-find stamp. (Scott Specialized 2026 value $95.)

While I do not find any outright defects, the overall appearance is of a well-used stamp. Priced appropriately low for the appearance, but still this is a stamp that is missing from many collections. (Scott 2024 $200.)

Scott #240 [1893 50c slate blue Recall Of Columbus] Mint with F-VF centering, but with aged paper and REGUMMED probably more than 75 years ago and likely over a thin. A few blunted perforation tips. Despite those quality issues, this is still a reasonable example of this very scarce stamp, at a very low price. This is a stamp that is missing from many collections. (Scott Specialized 2026 value $450.)
