NORWAY EARLY STAMPS

[Click on images to see the applicable price lists and more pictures,
along with links to larger pictures.]
I have added quite a few very attractive early Norwegian stamps in several sections:

   New Arrivals - Stamps
Gallery - Select Stamps (many pages)
   Bargain Stamps (many pages)
   Specialized Stamps (many pages)

Take a look -- there is something for everybody!

UNITED STATES STAMPS

[Click on images to see the applicable price lists and more pictures,
along with links to larger pictures.]
I have added to the website a wide range of attractive Mint and Used U.S. stamps, from early issues to modern, from Airmails to Periodicals. Even a scarce provisional (rate change) Domestic Parcel Post Insurance Stamp!

See the United States Table of Contents as a good starting point. There are hundreds of great stamps here!

Also, if you collect NH or Used modern U.S. stamps, there is a very strong range of both NH and Used Full Sheets, including very unusual multi-design issues USED in full sheets. Included are most of the NH VF sheets that have been featured in Linn's Stamp Market Tip column in the last few months. (And if you are seeking any U.S. post-1930 sheets that are not listed, please send your want list; I have a strong stock of "regular" sheets that have yet to be put on the website.)

By the way, if you collect U.S., U.N., or Canada and need some "normal, inexpensive" stamps, I probably have them in stock. Though my complete U.S. and Canada stock is not yet on the website, I have 21 bulging stockbooks packed with nice stamps. I would be happy to receive your want list and to send stamps on approval. This is the best way to add to your collection. Just let me know a) what you are seeking; b) any instructions about the priority order I should send items; c) and how much ($) you wish to see at a time (minimum $40, please).

Scandinavian Stampless Mail Book Near Sell-Out

The incredibly useful book, Stampless Mail to and from Scandinavia to 1868, by Gordon A. Hughmark & Don Halpern, 1999, was printed in a very limited quantity. Unfortunately, co-author Don Halpern passed away not too long ago (at much too young an age). Prior to his passing Don sent me the few remaining copies of the book. Apparently, the book has just been discovered / re-discovered by a new generation of European collectors and in the last few days, half the remaining copies have been sold.

This is a book that I have particular pride in because, though I did not write it, edit it, or publish it, the preface says: "The seed for this book was planted at BALPEX 1987 during a conversation with Jay Smith...." It is rare in philately that one intense conversation can lead to such an important result -- I wish I could have such a conversation at least once per month!

Don Halpern's tenacious, scientific approach (he was a chemist) and Gordon Hughmark's incredible depth of knowledge, and their joint ability to engage the major collectors and researchers of such material, resulted in a book that is a true gift to philately.

If you have a serious interest in virtually any aspect of early Scandinavian, Northern German (i.e. Hamburg, etc.), or European postal history, you owe it to yourself to get this book now -- while you still can!

Stamps for the Wounded -- An Update

In my last E-News, I suggested donating surplus stamps to Stamps for the Wounded, a program that helps Vets in VA hospitals and recovery facilities by using stamps. I have since been told that the contact information / website I referenced may not be as active & useful as I thought.

The current and best contact for Stamps for the Wounded is the "National Contact" John Hotchner. (The group does not have a website.) John is a veteran philatelist, philatelic exhibiting judge, Linn's Columnist, American Philatelic Society past president -- and all around great person! I have known him for many years. John's email address is: jmhstamp AT ix.netcom.com REPLACE the AT with @ (and no spaces).

If you have excess stamp collecting supplies, introductory philatelic literature, duplicate stamps, etc., please consider contacting John for more information. Just think how much pleasure that old "kid's album" would give a Vet who is bored to tears in a VA hospital. To such a person, any kind of stamps are a new and different learning experience. Even though such a group of duplicates or a basic collection of a few hundred cheap stamps might not have "commercial" value, it will have great value to that Vet and may start a new collector.

We are attending the....
35th Annual Raleigh Coin & Stamp Show
June 21-22, 2008
Raleigh, North Carolina

Raleigh's (and thus all of North Carolina other than Charlotte) largest annual show. There should be a good range of stamp dealers. We will have our general U.S., Worldwide, and Scandinavia show stock, including collections, U.S. post cards, "dollar covers", etc., etc. If you wish us to be sure to bring specific types of Scandinavian material, please send an email. Free parking and free admission.

For the latest information, see our show schedule.

3.  Special Offers: Collections & Albums -- Great Buys Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

I am constantly buying large and small Scandinavian, U.S., and Worldwide collections. If you are considering getting into a new area and would like a "starter collection" (whether small or large), let me know about your interest. Also, if you are seeking used binders or used empty albums to match what you currently have, again, let me know. In the process of buying Scandinavian collections, many of my long-time clients (or their estates) ask that I assist in selling the non-Scandinavian portion of their collections. If there is something you are looking for, just let me know. Take a look at the current listings on the web site (but if you don't see your interest listed, please inquire -- most have not been listed on the web site yet).

I guarantee your satisfaction. Each item is one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of your check or money order if you prefer.

Most of these books are one-of-a-kind, thus be sure to order early. This is just a tiny glimpse of the used books available. Please take a look at the complete Literature Specials price list -- it has much more to offer. I welcome your want list for any Scandinavian books you are seeking. "New" books will be in brand-new condition. "Used" books will be used, though in attractive and serviceable condition; these books may contain minor owner's marks and have typical wear, but any significant defects will be noted in the description. Most "used" books are in much better condition than you might think; many are pristine.

For more, see: Scandinavian & Worldwide Literature Specials Table of Contents.

#731527   AFA Iceland Specialized Catalog 1997 (English Translation)
(AFA, SPF, Smith; 1997) Translated, revised, and completely updated listings from the 1995 (Danish) Specialized Catalog. In my opinion, the best Iceland catalog for issues to 1940. Stamps, plate varieties, cover and postal history pricing, postal rates, early cancels, etc. Completely in English. (New is in stock: #1571, $44.50) Used; the binding is just a little worn, but the pages are fresh. Despite the age, there is information in here that is nowhere else. $17.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731529   Scandinavian Revenue Stamps Volume I
(Nelson, 1983) Danish West Indies, Faroes, Greenland, Iceland, Norway. This is THE standard reference (still) for the revenues of these countries (except Norway which now has a new catalog). Gently used copy of the hardbound reprint edition; there are only a couple insignificant collector marks in the Iceland pages, otherwise absolutely like new. (New copies of the hardbound reprint edition are in stock for $24.00 if you prefer [#10036].) $15.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731528   Handbook of Icelandic Cancels: Danish, Early Town, Crown and Posthorn
(Foreningen Islandssamlarna, 1997; Handbok over Islandska Stamplar av typerna Danska, Antikva, Grotesk, Krona och Posthorn) The "Crown and Posthorn" handbook. Also includes Danish numeral cancels in Iceland; and early serif and sans-serif town cancels. Important reference. Recommended. (Brand new, perfect examples are available #17023 $43.95.) This copy looks absolutely brand new except for a couple insignificant small (really) dents in the binder. $28.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731526   Iceland Christmas Seal Catalog and Album Pages
(Eythorsdottir, 2000; Jolimerki Thorvaldsensfelagsins) Attractive and interesting book giving the history of the Icelandic Christmas Seals official issuer and listing all the seals. Full color and with information about each seal, but entirely in Icelandic. Useful and a pleasure to view. This copy has a stain on the cover and title page, but otherwise the contents are in great condition. PLUS a set of collector made Iceland Christmas Seal album pages 8.5 x 11, very heavy white paper, but not punched. Title page scuffed, but actual album pages are brand new (and very professional) looking. PLUS, to top it off, a gently used set of Facit 2001 - Scott 2001 (and the other way around) Catalog Number Concordance Pages for Iceland and DWI. $14.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731530   Scotts Stamp Monthly Magazines 1932-1935
Group of 9 different copies ranging from June 1932 (Volume 13, Number 4) to August 1935 (Volume 17, Number 6). At this time, the magazine was really a "house organ" with only Scott advertising. It lists all the new stamps (in just a couple pages in each issue!!!!) and presents new discoveries in a folksy way. Every issue has interesting articles and columns. There is a very interesting article on the Pony Express and another on why Duck Stamps are needed (before the first one was issued). The editors dared to say things that our friends at Scott Publishing would not say today. They are fascinating and loads of fun to read -- I looked at every page; I just could not put them down. Take a trip back in time! All 9 magazines are in Superb condition. $18.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731531   The Observers Book of Postage Stamps
(Anthony S.B. New, 1967; 1968 reprint) Tiny (3.75 x 5.75 x .7 inches, 240 pages) hardbound book. A British-published (this edition apparently for the U.S. market) introduction to philately that is completely readable (unlike some). This is not a "terms and definitions" book. It is an overview that takes the reader through the story of stamps. I wonder how many thousands of collectors were started by this book? Even the "advanced" collector of today will learn something from this book. The only example I have seen in 35 years! Near-new condition. $12.00
