40 [1891 2 öre Ringtype Posthorn on Back] (VF+) on BEAUTIFUL 16 October 1891 local printed matter rate cover from "STOCKHOLM / HÖTORGET", with "STOCKHOLM / St. 5 TUR" receiver. Unusually nicely centered stamp on an unusually nice cover, used quite early for this stamp. Such nice 2 öre uses are very scarce. Wonderful quality.

Scott #43 [1886 5 öre Ringtype With Posthorn on Back] (Superb) on very attractive 23 January 1887 post card with a faint "(PKX)P No 39 B" RAILWAY cancellation, to Borås. The stamp correctly pays the domestic post card rate. The post card is a "formular" style. The appearance of the address side is virtually identical to the officially issued postal stationery cards of the era, except that there is no printed postage indicia. Collecting the various designs / types of the early Swedish formular post cards is a challenging, though fascinating and rewarding, endeavor. There are many variations of the address-side designs; some of them quite remarkable in appearance. They make a beautiful mini collection. (I would be happy to assist with such a project.) This stamp was mostly used for the 5 öre local letter rate; examples used for the 5 öre post card rate are scarcer.

46 [1886 20 öre Ringtype Posthorn on Back] (F-VF) on June 1891 cover to Finland, with Finnish "FRÅN UTLANDET" cancellation and NIKOLAISTAD "Finland style" 5 June 1891 receiver. Unobtrusive tear at top, away from the stamp. Either posted in Sweden uncanceled (doubtful), or handed to a ship leaving harbor (typical), or posted on board a Swedish-flag ship en-route to Finland (typical). Very attractive with brilliant orange stamp and sharp postmark.

Scott #46 x2 [1886 20 öre Ringtype With Posthorn on Reverse] (XF) Two examples on 14 August 1886 DOUBLE-WEIGHT REGISTERED cover from STOCKHOLM to Hudiksvall. Bold "R" handstamp, handwritten registry number (26913) a blue "505" which was likely added at the destination post office for local tracking and delivery purposes, and a manuscript "2" indicating that it double weight (15-125 grams) weight cover. Properly franked: the postal rate at that time was 10 öre for the first 15 grams and another 10 öre up to 125 grams; the registry fee was 20 öre. A business-size cover 183 x 117 mm with a nice, intact red wax seal on reverse. A very attractive example of a rate / use that is not often seen.

Scott #50 [1889 10 on 12 öre Surcharged Ringtype] (F-VF) used 14 December 1889 as additional postage uprating a MATCHING 10 öre Surcharge on 12 öre postal stationery envelope (Facit #5 Type VI B, in VF quality), from "STOCKHOLM St. 5" to Bayreuth, BAYERN (Bavaria, part of Germany), with a "BAYREUTH II" 17 December receiver on reverse. The 20 öre postal rate is correct for a letter to UPU member countries. For the purposes of UPU membership, with the UPU founding in 1874, Bavaria was a "sub-administration" under the UPU membership of unified Germany. While Bavaria became part of unified Germany in 1871, it was one of the German States that retained some special privileges. For example, Bavaria retained its own army. More philatelically important, Bavaria (and also Württemberg) retained their own postal independence, with their own postal systems. Bavaria remained postally independent through 31 March 1920. For this reason, covers to Bavaria, such as this one, are addressed to Bayern (Bavaria), not to Germany. While I would expect Swedish covers to Bavaria to be seen fairly often, I have had extremely few examples in 53 years. The MATCHING overprinted stamp and overprinted postal stationery envelope came about for the same reason -- a reduction, in 1885, of the basic domestic letter rate from 12 öre to 10 öre. As there were no longer any postal rates requiring a 12 öre stamp, the post office (finally, in 1889) overprinted the excess 12 öre stamps and postal stationery envelopes. Despite the matching nature of the two overprinted items, it is in my experience, "fairly rare" to find the surcharged stamp up-rating the surcharged envelope as in this case. I can only recall having 3 or 4 such items in 53 years. Per Google AI, the letter was addressed to Premier-Lieutenant Hans-Georg von Doering (often spelled Döring). While he held that title as a Bavarian military officer, he also was considered to be part of the government administration. He has an interesting military and political history (even including being the Imperial Vice-Governor and Acting Governor of Togoland until the outbreak of WWI!!) and is worthy of an Internet search. While this cover is quite unusual on its face (the matching stamp and stationery overprints), it is also quite unusual in multiple other respects.

Scott #51 [1889 10 on 24 öre Surcharged Ringtype] (VF) on an unusual 3 October 1897 philatelic (or perhaps an exposition souvenir item) cover with a remarkable and ornate (but heavy) "STOCKHOLM / UTSTALLNINGEN / SÖDRA STATIONEN" cancellation of the 1897 (proper name in English) "General Art and Industrial Exposition of Stockholm" but often called the "Stockholm Exposition" or the "Stockholm Worlds Fair". It opened on 15 May 1987 and this cover was canceled on the last day of the exposition, 3 October 1897. The cover is addressed to the pharmacy in Tumba and the 10 öre stamp correctly paid the correct domestic letter rate, but this cover may or may not have actually been mailed. If you are interested in other related exposition items, a Swedish postal stationery card with an incredible design was issued in 1897 and is often found canceled with exposition postmarks. I usually have such items in stock; please inquire -- they seldom get put on the website. This stamp is "very scarce" on cover. Even philatelic covers are seldom encountered. The Facit Classic 2024 value on cover is SEK 800.
