"NYKÖPING / FrBr" Free Letter (official mail) to Fahlun (Falun) semi-circular cancellation; a beautiful strike on a superb folded cover (no contents). Facit Postal X (page 71) indicates this postmark was in use 1823-1853, however, a strike this nice must have been from the early years before the device became worn. This is one of the more interesting looking Swedish postmark designs from this era. One could not ask for a nicer looking example!

LAHOLM straight-line F-VF postmark on 14 January 1830 folded letter, complete with contents, to Warberg. This postmark is always faint. The very thin paper results in the interior writing showing through. A very scarce postmark; Facit Postal VIII 2009 value SEK 1800 = $270!

SKÖFDE straight-line cancel, used 1819-1830, (VF) on very attractive official mail "Fr.Br." folded cover, no contents, to Mariestad. The handwritten "4" is the "charta" number; the recording serial number for the contents of the mailbag. A nice red wax seal with an adjacent signature. (Because the wax seal, in this case, was a private seal, not an official office seal, I believe the sender had to sign the cover to announce their authority to send this as free official mail.) Excellent quality. Facit Postal X value SEK 400, but this is more attractive than usual.

STOCKHOLM 10 July 1849 circular cancellation on complete folded letter with contents, to London, via HAMBURG. With double-ring circular transit postmark on reverse of "KS&NPA / HAMBURG" [Royal Swedish and Norwegian Post Office in Hamburg]. The postmark is on top of the red London postmark. Designated "K15" (and valued at $50-100 in 1999) by Hughmark and Halpern, it was in regular use 1848 through 1856 -- this is relatively early use when the device was still in good condition. Also present are a Hamburg postmark, and a London receiver, with various rate markings, including being re-rated. The contents are in English; a letter discussing payment for insurance on a shipment from Sweden to New York, and accounting for various other payments. (It is amazing that all parties were able to keep straight all these details.) An attractive early cover in excellent condition.
