Scott #28 Grayish Ultramarine, Facit #16Lddd [1882 20 penni 4-Numeral, Perforation 12.5, 1882 Printing] (VF) on 19 February 1883 cover with RAILWAY cancellations #48. The railway postmarks are roughly struck, but that is virtually always the case (working quickly on a moving train). There is no return address or information to tell us if this was picked up by the train from a hanging mailbag or if it was mailed aboard the train. Addressed to Helsingfors [Helsinki] and arriving the same day, with an "ANK" receiver postmark. The cover was dated in pencil at upper left either by the recipient or a later archivist. There are no postal markings on the reverse. Addressed to a student at "Poste restante" [general delivery, pickup at the post office]. "Poste restante" covers are somewhat unusual. Small, neat cover, intact in excellent condition. Such nice examples are seldom found today.

29 Aniline Pink [1882 25 penni perf 12.5 4-Numeral] (VF) on 31 July 1884 cover with blue NYSTAD 2-ring cancel and with blue carved "cork" cancel (which may have been Nystad or perhaps a smaller community -- in the cork cancel book it is without attribution). Transiting ÅBO, across the Bay of Bothnia (probably via Åland), to Stockholm. Bears Swedish "PKXP No 5C" railway transit postmark, probably taking it on its way to Göteborg or Malmö, from where it was put on a ship TO NEW YORK. Addressed to seaman on the Finnish bark AALTO under the command of Captain Ahlsten, IN CARE OF THE RUSSIAN CONSULATE in New York. A beautiful cover and very scarce in respect to the a) unusually nice quality; b) scarce usage of cork cancellation on cover; and c) the "seaman letter" usage via the consulate.
