83, 85, 91 [M-17 Saarinen Lions 5p Green, 10p Red, 25p Blue; without watermark] (VF) on very unusual 22 July 1919 cover from NUMMELA to RAUMO, with receiver, both postmarks with Russian text removed. 40 penni domestic letter rate 15 April 1918 through 19 October 1919 paid by the set of three "UPU colors" stamps; a combination rarely seen on cover and of special significance because the colors of the stamps had meaning in relation to the postage rates for which they were issued. Very nice!

Scott #94, 85 [M-17 Saarinen Lions, Unwatermarked: 1917 40 penni violet, Perforation 14; 10 penni rose] (VF) on 14 August 1919 cover with a RAVANSAARI Russian-Text-Removed cancellation, followed the next day with a "TRANGSUND / UURAA" Russian-Text-Removed dated side cancellation. Sent to Stockholm, Sweden, with a faint 20 August receiving postmark on the reverse. Ravansaari was an island, port village, and fortress district located in the Vyborg / Viipuri Bay. Both Ravansaari and Uuraa were part of the same harbor complex; Trangsund / Uuraa being the supervising post office for Ravansaari. LOST TERRITORIES: The entire area, along with Vyborg / Viipuri was ceded to Russia after WWII. The Trangsund / Uuraa island/town area was renamed Vysotsk, while Ravansaari became Maly Vysotsky Island. BOTH POSTMARKS ARE EARLIER THAN THE PUBLISHED DATES for the Russian text removed type, in the 1997 handbook of the Russian text cancellations. The RAVANSAARI is also "quite scarce" (R4 in the Lost Territories postmarks book); the Finnish post office names book (published a few years earlier than the Russian text book) does not even seem to list it as having a postmark in 1919. The 50 penni postage paid the correct rate for a 20 gram foreign letter (the Nordic letter rate did not start until 1922), 12 March 1918 thru 31 January 1921. Beautiful beehive watermarked envelope. A very attractive LOST TERRITORIES cover.

Scott #100 PAIR [1921 75 penni yellow M-17 Saarinen Lion] (VF) on February 1928 ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISING ENVELOPE from "....SAMO" (KUUSAMO if my research is correct) to Hämeenlinna, with 17 February 1928 bridge-posthorn receiving postmark on reverse. This was an order-placing envelope, used either by a customer or traveling sales person, for the "Otava" watch / clock / jewelry company. There are two images on the front; a distinguished older man with a pocket watch and a cherub or Cupid forging rings (likely jewelry or wedding rings). Such images were commonly used by European jewelers at the time. The total 1.50 postage correctly paid the domestic letter rate to 20 grams (15 Jan 1926 thru 30 Nov 1931). Illustrated advertising covers from Finland are quite unusual. Outstanding quality!

Scott #101 [1917 1 mk red and black M-17 Saarinen Lion] (VF) on 13 March 1925 envelope FRONT ONLY with extensive illustrated advertising. From "TAMPERE As. / TAMMERFORS B." with Russian-text-removed cancellations, to Turku. Two mounting tape stains showing through from the back (which could be moderated by an expert restorer). Penciled receiving and reply dates noted. The advertising is the most interesting aspect of this SOCIAL HISTORY cover. The Finnish text is hard to translate, but in the round logo at top, the top word can translate to "National Army" or "International" or "Peace" or "National Flag" depending on the mood of Google Translate / Lens at any given moment. The center illustration is a Peace Dove. The words at the sides translate to "Bible Student". The bottom word translates to "Society". The words below offer a book "Millions Living Now Will Never Die", a magazine "Golden Time", and the magazine "The Watchtower" -- which I presume to indicate that this is connected with Jehovah Witness evangelism. From a POSTAL HISTORY standpoint, the final text at lower left states that the magazines can also be ordered from "all Finnish post offices". This last aspect is a feature of the Scandinavian postal services that is virtually unknown to most collectors and even many postal historians -- that people could subscribe to magazines and pay for magazine subscriptions through virtually any post office; the payment was handled through the post giro (postal payment) systems. Though the tape stains are unfortunate, this is a fascinating item of both social and postal history.

Scott #108, 136 [M-17 Saarinen Lions: 1917 10 mk Unwatermarked, Perforation 14; 2 mk Watermark Swastika, Perforation 14] (VF) on 31 May 1927 domestic parcel card from "TURKU 2 / ÅBO 2" (bilingual bridge type cancellation) to SALO (bridge posthorn type receiving postmark on reverse, received the same day) for one 6 kilo parcel stated to contain COFFIN / CASKET SUPPLIES; the sender name translates to the Nordic Wreath Factory. On the left side is die cut, illustrated (dog and child tugging on something) brand label "BUSTER BROWN HOSIERY". The 12 mk postage paid the correct rate for a 6 kg parcel (9 mk for 3-5 kg, plus 3 mk for each additional kilo; 1 July 1924 thru 31 August 1942). An overall superb example; the 10 mark stamp is "quite scarce" on any type of cover; this example is very lightly, attractively canceled.

Violet handstamp at top indicating that the package can be picked up at the post office after 14:00 hours. The stamp is perforated 14.25 x 14.75 and is used in 1928, thus it can only be the posthorn watermarked stamp with is rare on cover; 2006 Facit value SEK 3000 = $400. Very fresh and nice... and rare.

132a, 149 Pair [1926 50 p M-17 Saarinen Lion perf 14.25 x 14.75; 1927 3 mk M-17 Saarinen Lion perf 14.25 x 14.75] (F-VF, VF) on March 1928 registered parcel card. UNUSUAL SENDING / RECEIVING PAIRING: Karelian Lost Territories "VIIPURI 2" [Viborg/Wiborg] (posthorn at bottom) to Arctic / Lapland ROVANIEMI (posthorn at bottom) receiver cancellation on reverse. The watermark is visible (at extreme oblique angle) on the #132a. The watermark is not visible on the #149 pair, however, the perforation 14.25 x 14.75 does not exist unwatermarked and while the swastika watermark (Scott 137) does exist on this perforation, it can usually be detected, thus I believe it to be 149 (the posthorn watermark is extremely difficult to see on cover). Registered parcel cards are scarce! While parcel cards from/within EITHER the Lost Territories or Lapland are not unusual, cards going from one to the other are unusual and add "spice" to a collection.

The message date line says it was written "På båt Borgå - Helsingfors". Thus this is a SHIP MAIL card, but it did not receive any special ship mail marking upon arrival in Helsingfors; perhaps the sender turned it in at a post office in Helsingfors.
