Scott #177, 179, 205 Red Violet, 249, 250, C2, on a 30 August 1946 tidy airmail registered cover from "HELSINKI / AVION / HELSINGFORS" to the U.S. This almost seems like a proverbial "one of each stamp in the postal drawer" cover, but since it was sent to a young Alfred Kugel (1930-2022) -- who in the following 50+ years would become a major authority on the "war covers" of the world -- the postage combination is not so much of a surprise. Bearing registration and airmail postal labels, there is a manuscript "5g" [5 grams] marking. The 56.50 mk of postage on the cover overpays the needed 42 mk total of applicable postage rates / services, which were: 1) Surface postage rate of 10 mk for up to 20 grams (1 Sep 1945 thru 31 Dec 1946). 2) Airmail Surcharge Group 6 (in addition to the surface postage) of 22 mk per 5 grams (1 Apr 1946 thru 14 Jan 1947). 3) Registration of foreign letter, 10 mk (1 Sep 1945 thru 31 Dec 1946). Such overpayment occurs often on letters between philatelists. However, the nature of the envelope, the franking, and having known the addressee, I am "very sure" that this was a legitimate postal use for correspondence, just with some embellishment. This is a great opportunity to possess a cover that was once in the collection of a person who was, in my estimation, the most knowledge philatelist ever in the world on the subject of wartime covers.
