A wide range of "better" Danish, Finnish, Greenlandic, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish stamps have been added to the website. See them in the various Gallery, Bargains, and New Arrivals Sections for the respective countries.

With this edition of the E-News, I am also trying an experiment to show thumbnail images (with links) of many newly added "better" stamps. Take a look at this Image Gallery section and let me know what you think. I am especially interested in knowing if adding this section a) worked in your browser and b) if it caused any problems taking too long to load this E-News page. I welcome your feedback.... and please look at the stamps too!

NEWLY ISSUED SCANDINAVIAN STAMPS

I have added to the website the new/recent stamps, year packs, and year books for Åland, Denmark, Faroe, Greenland, and Iceland.

I have yet to add the "additional items" that the post offices did not include in the 2007 year packs to the year pack web pages. I would normally also send them if you request a year pack, thus please let me know if you specifically do or do not want any stamps and souvenir sheets that the post offices did not place in the year packs.

The new issue individual stamps for Finland, Norway, and Sweden are in stock as well, but I don't yet have them on the website. Please send your want list!

NORWAY LABELS

I have added very interesting pages of Norwegian Labels:
    Patriotic, Political, and Military Labels
    Expositions, Exhibitions, and Fairs Labels
    Regional Labels
    Advertising and Various Labels

Labels are issued for many purposes, including commercial advertising and promotion; fundraising (usually then called "seals"); propaganda, publicity, and education; non-governmental payment receipts (example: union dues); and series issued for label collectors. (Post-office issued labels will be considered separately.) In the early part of the 1900s, collecting labels issued in series was very popular, with a few issuers publishing albums (but not in Norway to my knowledge); usually one had to buy a product or visit a store to obtain a label for the album. The term "poster stamps" is often applied to many labels because they are really miniature posters. Labels often look like stamps, but can range from smaller to much larger; from boring and crude to stunning works of art; and from very inexpensive to quite valuable. Some collectors seek labels either for specific thematic appeal or for design elements of the artwork. Norwegian labels, in both overall variety and quantities printed, seem to be few and far between compared to the masses issued in many European countries during the early 1900s. (In Scandinavia, Danish issuers were by far the most prolific, with Swedish issuers well behind and the other countries with many fewer issues. Approvals are available from all Scandinavian countries.) Even the most "common" of labels is usually extremely scarce compared to the postage stamps of the same time period; there are many $5 labels that would be worth $500 if they were postage stamps. It is important to note that, over the years, labels have not received the same level of care usually afforded to postage stamps and thus labels are much more likely to have condition problems. Lesser condition always affects the value, but do not automatically pass up a label for that reason alone; you may never see another example of it.

WORLDWIDE STAMPS

In the Worldwide Stamps a lot of stamps have been added, with particular emphasis on British Colonies. Links to each country are in the Worldwide Table of Contents.

Bahrain, British Antarctic Territories, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Kuwait, Maldive Islands, Malta, Oman, Qatar, Rhodesia, Russia, Saint Helena, Samoa, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia.

Japan "20th Century" complete set of souvenir sheets

Take a look at the Worldwide Table of Contents for those and other countries.

3.  Norden 2008 Mythology Issues & Folder Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

Today, March 27, 2008, is the day of issue for the third and last of the Norden Mythology Joint Issue series.

In 2004 and 2006, and now in 2008, each of the eight Nordic / Scandinavian countries issued a Norden Mythology theme souvenir sheet. Additionally, some of the countries issued regular sheet stamps, as well as a couple other related souvenir sheets, etc.

All the souvenir sheets are available separately, of course, but each of the three joint Norden Mythology issues has also been released in a special folder (one folder for each of the three issue years) containing all eight souvenir sheets of the issue year (and only the souvenir sheets; the other related stamps are not in the folder).

At this writing, I am awaiting arrival of the 2008 folders and stamps issued today. However, they are on their way and I will have them in hand very soon.

If you have already placed your order and/or if you are a subscriber to my Scandinavian New Issue Service, you will be receiving these items.

If you have not placed your order for the 2008 issues, please do so now.

The information on the 2008 Norden page is preliminary, but at least the prices should not change. You might want to check back for additional items, particularly in relation to cylinder numbers on the Swedish souvenir sheets.

If you wish to have any of the 2004 and 2006 Norden Mythology souvenir sheets, folders, or other items, please do not delay! Supplies are getting very tight.

Norwegian Seamen's Homes in Foreign Ports Seals -- A Revision

When I put together the website listing for these interesting seals, I failed to follow my own rule to always use the most recent literature. I had used a 1993 listing by Thor Paaby instead of the current listing published by Vemund Ljodal.

It turns out that Paaby had the dates wrong for some seals. What Paaby (and thus I) listed as 1960-1974 seals are really 1959-1966 seals, with 1966 the last year of issue. I have corrected the listings. I have also been able to add & improve some illustrations as well as add a few more items to the offerings.

Lastly, it was pointed out to me that these particular seals are "Charity Seals", not "Christmas Seals" because they were not specifically issued in relation to Christmastime. I have yet to make that textual and web page name change, but I will be doing so soon (the links will continue to work).

Please take a look at the two pages of listings.

By the way, I will soon have updated editions of Ljodal's Norwegian seals and labels books available. Please let me know if you are interested in the details, when available.

The Shopping Cart & Cookies

A few days ago I received an inquiry from a client who frequently orders from the website. All of a sudden, when he added an item to his shopping cart, the shopping cart would remain empty. Unfortunately, he has not been able to provide me with any further information. Then, in the intervening days, another client reported difficulties, but without any explanation of what the problem was. A couple weeks prior to that, a client had asked why when he adds items to the shopping cart at his office, they are not there when he views the shopping cart on his computer at home. The first two inquiries are the first in several years on the subject -- I hope that there is not a problem being caused by automatic updates of operating systems or browsers.

First of all, if you have any type of problem using my website, please let me know. I am always seeking to improve the site.

I thought a bit of information about our simple shopping cart and cookies might be useful. For this purpose, I have added a section to the FAQ page about cookies, etc. You may find it useful for my website, and others. (Suggestions and comments on the FAQ page are always welcome.)

The Website Continues to Grow

There are now 1568 pages on the website, up from 1544 three weeks ago. That may sound overwhelming, but the navigation from area to area and within sections seems to work well; at least nobody is telling me differently. If you have comments about navigating around the website, or any suggestions for website improvements, please do not hesitate to let me know.

5.  Special Offers: Collections & Albums -- Great Buys Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

I am constantly buying large and small Scandinavian, U.S., and Worldwide collections. If you are considering getting into a new area and would like a "starter collection" (whether small or large), let me know about your interest. Also, if you are seeking used binders or used empty albums to match what you currently have, again, let me know. In the process of buying Scandinavian collections, many of my long-time clients (or their estates) ask that I assist in selling the non-Scandinavian portion of their collections. If there is something you are looking for, just let me know. Take a look at the current listings on the web site (but if you don't see your interest listed, please inquire -- most have not been listed on the web site yet).

I guarantee your satisfaction. Each item is one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of your check or money order if you prefer.
