13 [1864 4 sk Arms] Used VF Light Red FOUR-STRIP with neat #24 numeral cancellations. Light creasing, small thin spot, and sensibly reinforced in center, but very attractive and quite scarce. Scott #14, Facit #14a, AFA #14.1, First Printing [1864 8 skilling Crown, Scepter, Sword. Comb Perforation 13 x 12.5] Used with VF-XF centering and very neat, light #181 (railway) duplex numeral cancellation. This stamp has the usual, completely normal, irregular perforations of the First Printing. The first printing is often described in the literature as grayish brown on thin paper, while the second (and only other printing with this perforation) is often described as yellowish brown or light brown, on medium-thin paper. However, the first printing is probably better described as either olivish-grayish yellow (on distinctly thin paper) brown and the second printing as yellow brown (on medium-thin paper). Neither printing is in the "brown" family despite the color naming. Because the first printing stamps are on such thin paper, they are often found in damaged quality; when closely examined most examples found in the general marketplace turn out to be damaged in some way. Almost equal quantities of both printings were printed and the catalogs assign them equal values, but in reality it is harder to find undamaged examples of the first printing. A remarkably well centered, lightly canceled, and DEFECT-FREE example of this "scarce" stamp. ACTUAL item. |

Scott #15, AFA #15.3x variety. Printing 3, December 1869 (Greenish Olive on Yellowish Paper) [1864 16 skilling Crown, Sword, and Scepter; Comb Perforation 13 x 12.5] Used with XF/Superb centering and neat, light but clear #70 [Svendborg] numeral cancellation (placed sideways). However, on the reverse -- not visible from the front -- there is an ancient stamp album mounting stain spot. AFA-listed plate (matrix) variety #15x: "thick oval frame line outside of "G" of "KGL" is very uneven". This Third Printing is the scarcest of the three printings. Extremely nice perforations (the small variance in tooth width is normal and expected for this issue); such nice perforation quality is seldom found on this stamp. A wonderfully attractive example! If not for the spot on the reverse, this would be $250 for this centering, without counting the AFA premium value for the variety! ACTUAL item. |
