232 GERMAN PAPER, Facit #229a variety, AFA #204A [1933 20 øre gray Caravel, First Type] NEVER HINGED with F-VF+ centering. Wonderfully fresh. The German Paper printing was the first printing. The paper and the gum are darker under UV light; the gum is also quite a bit darker under daylight. The gray ink of the German Paper stamps are always GREEN under UV light, however, the first printing(s?) of the Danish Paper are also green under UV light (but the AFA Specialized fails to list that version, even though they list it for the 8 øre gray Numeral). The dark gum is the distinguishing characteristic for the German Paper. The German Paper stamps are only listed by the AFA Specialized Catalog. They were virtually all used up in normal postal use, thus NH or Mint examples are seldom offered. An excellent example!

233 (German Paper) [1933 25 øre blue Caravel] Mint VF centered 4-Block, but without gum. Wonderful appearance! This stamp is one of only two (the other is the 30 øre orange) of the first engraving type that were issued only on the German Paper. Mint blocks of the German Paper stamps are scarce. This stamp is the key value of the set and the key value of the time period. Four Mint Hinged singles would sell for $336!

Scott #233 [1933 25 øre blue Caravel] Used with F-VF+ centering and a SUPERB SKIVE 5 December 1933 cancellation. Very attractive with delicate greenish-blue color, nice centering, and excellent perforations. An outstanding example in all respects. This stamp is "extremely scarce" with such a perfectly centered cancellation. In Used condition, this is the key face-different stamp of the entire Engraved Caravel issue. This stamp is missing (or not in such nice quality) from many high-quality Used Danish collections and also missing from Danish collections in the category of "one of each stamp with a perfect cancellation"!

Denmark Scott #236 [1934 30 öre blue Engraved Caravel, Type I] (VF) on a typical piece of money order form with clear THORSHAVN 18 May 194(0) cancellation. I believe that the year date says 1940, but the final digit is unclear. The STAMP HAS "V.L." PERFIN, SIDEWAYS, right reading upwards viewed from the right, from front of stamp, of the Valdemar Lützen company (the major Faroese oil and petroleum products company at the time). The V.L. perfins are much scarcer in positions other than upright, right-reading from the front of the stamp -- in my experience, sideways examples are very scarce. Though the market value may not be much different, they can be tremendously harder to find! In my experience, single loose used examples of this "daily use" stamp, from this time period, with an UPRIGHT VL perfin, sell quickly for $30-40, but sideways examples are "rarely" offered. I have good records since the 1990s of the stamps I have had with the VL perfin (very few). However, until about 2010, I did not keep complete records of the perfin POSITION on those stamps. However, I do not have a record of having had THIS POSITION on an earlyish VL perfin, though I may have had such prior to 2010. The different positions of perfins are sometimes the result of the stamps (in a large block or sheet) being folded, in various ways, into multiple thicknesses, before being punched. This depended upon the capability of the punch machine and the methods employed by the operator.

Denmark Scott #236 and #238A Large Pearls in Crown, Facit #227b [1934 30 öre blue Engraved Caravel, Type I and 1937 15 öre red Engraved Caravel] (VF) on a piece of envelope with clear THORSHAVN 19 June 1940 cancellations. ONLY THE 30 øre STAMP HAS A "V.L." PERFIN, right reading from the front of stamp, of the Valdemar Lützen company (the major Faroese oil and petroleum products company at the time). In my experience, single loose used examples of this "daily use" stamp, from this time period, with an UPRIGHT VL perfin, sell quickly for $30-40. It is quite unusual to see a piece or a cover bearing a mix of perfined and non-perfined stamps. Because perfins were a security measure to prevent theft of company-owned stamps, usually all the stamps the company used (in a specific time period) were perfined. Sometimes a mix of perfined and non-perfined stamps suggests an inappropriate use by an employee of the company, but that can only be determined if on a full cover showing non-company use.

Denmark Scott #238A Large Pearls in Crown, Facit #227b [1937 15 öre red Engraved Caravel] (VF) on a small piece of envelope with clear (THOR)SHAVN 17 January 1941 cancellation. The stamp is undamaged, but the piece is roughly torn from the envelope at bottom. The STAMP HAS "V.L." PERFIN, WRONG-READING from front of stamp (right-reading from the backside), of the Valdemar Lützen company (the major Faroese oil and petroleum products company at the time). The V.L. perfins are much scarcer in positions other than right-reading from the front of the stamp. Though the market value may not be much different, they can be tremendously harder to find! The stamp, as is often the case on this porous-paper issue, has some slight gum-soak. In my experience, single loose used examples of this "daily use" stamp, from this time period, with a VL perfin sell quickly for $30-40. I have good records since the 1990s of the stamps I have had with the VL perfin (very few). However, until about 2010, I did not keep complete records of the perfin POSITION on those stamps. Scott #238Al [1937 15 øre Dybbøl Mill with 15 øre RED "SMALL PEARLS" Engraved Caravel (see Scott #B6-8)] NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering BLOCK OF FOUR (without booklet pane binding margin). Wonderfully fresh and bright with excellent perforations and "pristine" NH original gum. This block contains Scott #238 VARIETY, Facit #227a, the "Fine Pearls in Crown" version, which is a scarce stamp in its own right -- this example is NH F-VF which sells well at $62 for just the Wavy-Lines stamp in this condition and quality. This block is offered at only the cost of the Small Pearls stamp in this condition and centering. The Small Pearls stamp is missing from many collections (and in some other collections it is incorrectly identified and is really just the normal Large Pearls).

Denmark Scott #230 Type II and #238J [1938 10 øre violet Wavy-Lines and 1940 40 öre blue Engraved Caravel] (VF) on a piece of envelope with THORSHAVN 18 February 1941 cancellation. BOTH STAMPS HAVE "V.L." PERFINS, both right reading from the front of stamp, of the Valdemar Lützen company (the major Faroese oil and petroleum products company at the time). In my experience, single loose used examples of the "daily use" stamps, from this time period, with an UPRIGHT VL perfin, sell quickly for $30-40 EACH. Because the two stamps could potentially be sold separately, I have valued this piece at a discount from the value of two perfins, even though the 40 øre stamp is seldom seen with this perfin.

Denmark Scott #239 [1934 50 öre Christian X] (Fine) on a small piece of envelope with an unclear cancellation. The STAMP HAS "V.L." PERFIN right-reading from front of stamp, of the Valdemar Lützen company (the major Faroese oil and petroleum products company at the time). The stamp has some discoloration, apparently from the cancellation. In my experience, single loose used examples of this "daily use" stamp, from this time period, with a VL perfin sell quickly for $40-50. However, since this stamp is not perfect, I offer it at a very low price. Since I started, in the 1990s, keeping records of the stamps that I have had with the VL perfin, this is the only example that I have had of this stamp with a VL perfin -- and I do not recall having any before I started keeping records.

The special booklet-making sheets from this stamp issue could be purchased by the public; the stamp show organizers printed their overprint, by typography / letterpress without official cooperation. A very popular, unusual in philately, and sought-after item. Though these NEPA items are seen from time to time, they are uncommon.

Denmark Scott #270 [1940 15 Overprint on 40 öre green Engraved Caravel, Type I] (VF) on a piece of brown laid-paper envelope with a clear THORSHAVN 1 August 1941 cancellation. The STAMP HAS "V.L." 271 OVERPRINT ERROR [1940 20 øre Surcharge on 15 øre Red Caravel, AFA Type II (w/o hook on spar)] Vertical bottom-margin pair with XF centering, Used with "...RUP" cancellation. 4/5-th of the overprint is missing from the top stamp and the overprint is entirely missing from the bottom stamp. This is most likely a sheet fold-over error whereby the bottom left corner of the sheet was folded up toward the upper right. However, it also could be the result of piece of "foreign matter" (i.e. a loose scrap of paper) getting between the overprint plate and the sheet of stamps. Either way, this type of error is transitory and either affected only one (fold-over) or up to a few (foreign matter) sheets of stamps. In Scott Catalogue error parlance, the lower stamp would qualify (as long as it is still attached to the upper stamp) as a full-scale "missing overprint error". This distinction puts it in a very special class of Danish rarities! While this is a rarely-seen type of error on Danish overprinted stamps, it is VERY RARE on a USED item because it had to be overlooked several times between production, quality control inspection, and use -- and then the pair had to remain intact. This is very likely UNIQUE. To the best of my memory, as of 9/2024, this is the only (either Mint or Used) Danish overprint-fold-over error -- and certainly the only one that resulted in a "missing overprint error" that I have been able to offer in my 50 year career.

TB 26 Brownish Violet - Brownish Shade (Facit #TB 297av) [10 øre Christian X Brownish Violet color of Scott #280] NH with XF-Superb centering. Tete-beche WITH GUTTER. This issue is special case: AFA only lists TB 26 as existing in one color (and TB 46 Light Violet, very rare), however, TB 26 exists in both very different Dark Violet and Brownish Violet colors. Furthermore, the latter can be divided into more-grayish vs more-brownish printings. This example is one of the more-brownish colors. AFA indicates that 2060 pairs were released, but this quantity must be divided between the Dark Violet and the two shades of the Brownish Violet colors!

The "bomb" variety is a diagonal line in the sky to the right of the tower, just below the top rim (on this example, it is between the top two lines of the cancellation). The tower bears a Hebrew inscription which causes this basic stamp to also be sought after by Judaica collectors. This is one of the nicest looking Used examples of this variety that I have had in a long time.
