The very popular Private Die Proprietary Revenue Stamps are more commonly known as "Match and Medicine" or "M&M" stamps. Despite the private nature of the designs, these are officially issued U.S. revenue stamps. The merchants were allowed to design and pay for their own printing die, but the printing was done by the usual government printers on officially supplied paper, etc. The are listed in the Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue, divided into four groups with prefixes: RO for Matches, RS for Medicines, RT for Perfumes, and RU for Playing Cards.
The Scott Catalogue states: "These stamps were usually torn in opening the box or container. Values quoted are for fine-very fine examples that may be somewhat faulty, but reasonably attractive, with the faults not usually readily apparent on the face. Nos. RS278-RS306 are valued in the grade of very fine [without defects]. Sound [without defects] examples of these stamps (other than Nos. RS278-RS306) at a grade of fine-very fine can sell for 50% to 300% more than catalog value. Outstanding examples of stamps in this section with a lower catalog value can bring many multiples of catalog value. "
