Scott #367 [1909 2c carmine Lincoln, Perforated 12, Normal Paper] Mint with VF centering, large margins, and great appearance. Scott #367 [1909 2c carmine Lincoln, Perforated 12, Normal Paper] Used with VF-XF centering and large margins. Lower straight-edge / guideline example. This is a bottom row stamp from one of the upper panes. Due to fortunate cutting placement, the bottom guideline is showing. Note that usually only-Fine centering is "required" to show guidelines. The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, by cutting along the central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a straight edge and guideline at the bottom (from upper panes) and another 18 at top (from lower panes). Four different corner positions, per 400 stamps, with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite the respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom straight-edge / guideline are now quite hard to find. I think that collecting guideline and straight-edges positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Examples with the straight-edges / guidelines are surprisingly hard to find, especially with such nice centering.

Scott #367 [1909 2c Carmine Lincoln, Perforated 12, Normal Paper] BLOCK OF FOUR with 3mm spacing. Mint with F-VF centering. Top pair is lightly hinged, the bottom pair is NH. Very attractive. Blocks of the perforated Lincoln stamps (and most of the perforation 12 stamps in general) are surprisingly hard to find. [The reason for 2 mm vs 3 mm spacing is explained by a note in the Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue following #330. In 1909, in an attempt to combat the effects of paper shrinkage (as the paper dried after printing), certain plates were prepared with 3 mm horizontal spacing between the 7 outer columns and 2 mm between the other columns. Whether in blocks or horizontal pairs, these are collectible varieties reflecting the production challenges of the era.] (Scott 2022 $19 as a fully hinged 4-block, but the singles with two NH total $27).

Scott #368 [1909 2c carmine Lincoln, Imperforate] NEVER HINGED horizontal PAIR with 2 mm spacing. Large margins and XF centering. Whether in blocks or horizontal pairs, these are collectible varieties reflecting the production challenges of the era.] Right guideline example (on right stamp) from one of the left panes. This is from the right side of one of the left panes. The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, by cutting along the central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a straight edge and guideline at the right (from left panes) and another 18 at left (from right panes). Four corner positions with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite this respective 4.5% of production, examples with a right or left guideline are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections). I think that collecting guideline (and straight-edges on perforated stamps) positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, examples with the guidelines are surprisingly hard to find. (Scott 2022 $57.50 for NH VF/80 pair, $58+ for VF-XF/85 two singles; obviously not quite right, and $75+ for XF/90 two singles, not taking into account the scarcity of the guideline.)

Scott #372 [1909 2c carmine Hudson-Fulton, Perforated] Mint hinged with Fine centering. Natural right straight edge example with full guideline. This is from the right margin of a left pane. This stamp was printed in sheets 240, divided into panes of 60, 6 columns and 10 rows, with a horizontal and vertical guideline between the panes. Only 9 stamps out of every 60-pane had only the natural straight edge at the right (and same for at left). Despite this respective 15% of production, examples with a right or left straight edge, and especially cut so that the full guideline is showing, are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless and/or because of all that, NH or Hinged examples with the straight edge on this fairly common stamp are surprisingly hard to find!
