U.S. Scott #499 [1920 2c Washington Flat Plate Type I. (Assumed to be the much lower cost Unwatermarked #499 instead of the very scarcer Watermarked #461).] Used with VF centering and Superb, complete, December 1919 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS "CHRISTIANSTED / SAINT CROIX / 2" duplex cancellation, on ample-sized piece. This use is after the 1917 sale of the Danish West Indies to the U.S. Straight edge at right and bottom. This is MOST LIKELY FROM A BOOKLET PANE, though it could also be the lower right position in the 400-stamp printer sheet (but that would be much scarcer). If this booklet pane or sheet had guidelines, they are not visible on this stamp. Many Mint straight edge single stamps were used for postage instead of being saved in collections; furthermore Used single examples with straight edges were often discarded instead of going into collections. In some cases, for stamps "with value", the straight edges may have been removed by reperforating. As a result, today straight edge examples can be hard to find.) I think that collecting the different straight edge and guideline positions and multiples is quite challenging and rewarding. USVI canceled stamps are seldom offered. This is a wonderful example in seldom-seen quality.

Scott #505 [1917 5c ROSE ERROR, Washington, Perf 11]. Mint, WITHOUT GUM, with Fine+ centering, but with a couple blunted perforation teeth. A very attractive example of a major U.S. error -- this error is so important that it received a full Scott number. Because of the lack of gum and the couple blunted perforations, this is offered at a low price -- this major error stamp is seldom seen offered at such a low price. (Scott 2026 value $325 with gum.)

Scott #509 [1917 9c salmon red Washington, Flat Plate, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] NEVER HINGED with centering that is at least XF. Scott #517 Perforation Variety [1917 50c red violet Franklin, Flat Plate, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] BOTTOM MARGIN VERTICAL PAIR, "LOOKS IMPERFORATE BETWEEN". Mint, very lightly hinged, with VF-XF centering. This pair LOOKS like the extremely rare Scott #517b, but this has extremely faint traces of just two perforation hole impressions in center margin and faint traces of perfs in bottom margin. Scott #517b may not exist in Mint condition; in the 2025 U.S. Specialized, the Scott editors ask for evidence that it does exist. They also state that the example known in Used (pre-canceled) condition may be unique! This pair may be as close as one can get to a Mint #517b! In 2006, Scott listed 517b at $6000 Mint hinged or Used. In 2009, Scott listed only Used, at a $10,000 value! However, in 2025 it is again listed by Scott (only Used) at $6000. While this pair cannot be labeled as 517b, the vertical pair to the right of it in the sheet was most likely 517b -- it is a nice neighborhood in which to live! An exceptional item of great importance.
