Scott #503 Light Brown [1917 4c Washington Sheet Stamp, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Mint, hinge remnant, with Fine centering. There is a small spot of gum loss next to the hinge, but it does NOT show as a thin in watermark fluid. Bottom margin PLATE NUMBER 8496 single. An unusually detailed engraving impression. Scott does not list this color shade, but it is clearly different. While ordinary Mint examples of this stamp are certainly not scarce, plate number singles of the 4c and higher denominations can be hard to find. (Scott 2026 value $8.50 for an ordinary Mint single.)

Scott #509 [1917 9c salmon red Washington, Flat Plate, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] NEVER HINGED with centering that is at least XF. Wonderfully fresh and attractive with strong color and virtually perfect centering. This stamp is quite difficult to find NH with such nice centering. Certainly this is the nicest NH example that I have had in 51 years. (Scott 2025 graded value for NH XF/90 is $57.50 and for NH XF-Superb/95 is $175.)

Scott #511 Dark Green [1917 11c green (shades) Franklin, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Mint hinged with F-VF centering. Wonderful color -- this is one of the Scott-listed colors for this stamp -- and "perfect" perforations. In my experience, nice examples of this odd-denomination stamp are underappreciated. (Scott 2026 value is only $7.50, but I think that is too low.)

Scott #512a [1917 12c brown carmine Franklin, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Mint hinged with Fine centering. Scott #515 (Dark) Ultramarine [1917 20c ultramarine (shades) Franklin, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Mint, hinge remnant, with F-VF centering. The color is quite a bit darker than the usual Light Ultramarine, but does not quite reach the extreme of the scarce Deep Ultramarine (and it is not the Gray Blue). This is a great example of a color shade that is not often offered. Strong color and "perfect" perforations. In my experience, this stamp is quite hard to find with better centering. (Scott 2026 value is $40, but I think that is too low.)

Scott #516 Dark Orange [1917 30c orange (shades) Franklin, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Mint, hinge remnant, with Fine centering. Scott only lists Orange Red and Dark Orange Red, but in my opinion, the color of this example is Dark Orange. (A color that I consider to be Yellowish Orange also exists.) This is a nice example of a strong color shade that is not often offered. In my experience, this stamp is quite hard to find with better centering. (Scott 2026 value is $30, but I think that is too low.)

Scott #516 [1917 30c orange red Franklin, Flat Plate, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Used with XF-Superb or Superb centering and balanced jumbo margins. A handsome example with a neat, light cancellation. A spectacular example of a stamp that is "rare" in such nice quality. This certainly must be the nicest example that I have had in 52 years. (Scott 2025 graded value for Used XF-Superb/95 $95 and for Superb/98 $325!)

Scott #517 Light Red Violet [1917 50c violet (shades) Franklin, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] Mint hinged with F-VF centering, but three short perforations at top. Scott lists Red Violet, Violet, and Light Violet (I have reference examples of all those), but Scott does not this Light Red Violet shade. This is an attractive, delicate color. Fresh looking with a detailed engraving impression. A very low priced example because of the perforation teeth at top. (Scott 2026 value is $47.50 for the most common color, but I think that is too low even for the regular Red Violet. This Light Red Violet is scarcer in my experience.)

Scott #517 Perforation Variety [1917 50c red violet Franklin, Flat Plate, Perforation 11, Unwatermarked] BOTTOM MARGIN VERTICAL PAIR, "LOOKS IMPERFORATE BETWEEN". Mint, very lightly hinged, with VF-XF centering. This pair LOOKS like the extremely rare Scott #517b, but this has extremely faint traces of just two perforation hole impressions in center margin and faint traces of perfs in bottom margin. Scott #517b may not exist in Mint condition; in the 2025 U.S. Specialized, the Scott editors ask for evidence that it does exist. They also state that the example known in Used (pre-canceled) condition may be unique! This pair may be as close as one can get to a Mint #517b! In 2006, Scott listed 517b at $6000 Mint hinged or Used. In 2009, Scott listed only Used, at a $10,000 value! However, in 2025 it is again listed by Scott (only Used) at $6000. While this pair cannot be labeled as 517b, the vertical pair to the right of it in the sheet was most likely 517b -- it is a nice neighborhood in which to live! An exceptional item of great importance.
