Scott #554 [1923 2c carmine, Flat Plate, Perf 11] Mint VF right margin 4-block with plate number 17312 and large 5-pointed star. For this plate number, the star only appeared in the right margin of the upper right pane (of the press sheet containing four panes). Reinforced with hinge, some separation. Very attractive with intense color. Normally collected in a plate block of six, but scarce enough that a 4-block is still desirable. (Scott 2022 value is $65 for a hinged full plate block of six stamps.)

Scott #568 DEEP (BLUE) GREEN [1922 25c green (shades) Niagara Falls, Flat Plate, Perf 11] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. Incredibly deep, intense color, excellent perforations, and very fresh appearance. Scott has an unnumbered sub-listing for this as "dark green", but I believe it should be described as "deep blue green". I have always been surprised that Scott has not seen fit to assign an actual sub-number to this deep blue green color. I believe that if a sub-number were assigned, that this color would become to be valued quite a bit higher than the more common yellow green. (Scott 2025 value $13.50 for the more common yellow green.)

Scott #571 [1923 $1 brown violet Lincoln Memorial] NEVER HINGED with VF centering. Right side guideline example from the 5th vertical column of stamps in both panes. The 1922 Fourth Bureau stamps $1 and $2 stamps (actually issued in 1923), Scott #571-572, were printed in sheets of 200, with panes above and below, divided (with a straight edge) into panes of 100 along a horizontal guideline, which is terminated in the left and right pane/sheet margins with an arrow. There is also a (perforated) vertical guideline (terminated at extreme top and bottom of the sheet by arrows) between columns 5 and 6. Examples with the vertical guideline seem to be scarce, likely due to the guideline stamps being reperforated. There are sheet/pane margins at left and right; they do not contain plate numbers. There are SHEET margins at top and bottom, resulting in PANE margins at top OR bottom, the opposite being a straight-edge with guideline. Only 10 stamps out of every 100-pane had the natural straight edge on one of the four sides; the cutting of some sheets placed the horizontal guideline on one pane or the other; examples showing the straight edge and the guideline are scarcer. Examples with the straight edge on top or bottom are now hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many -- at least of Mint stamps -- have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). Examples with the vertical guideline at right or left are also now hard to find for the same reasons. (I have yet not personally had an intersection example of the vertical guideline and horizontal straight-edge / guideline.) In the case of Used stamps with straight edges or guidelines of this otherwise-inexpensive dollar-value issue, many (most?) were discarded by collectors before their relative scarcity was understood. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Remarkably fresh with crisp and detailed engraving, great color, perfect perforations, and great gum. My price for the scarcer guideline position is the same as for a more common position. (Scott 2024 NH value $75.00.)
