Scott #205 Brown [1882 5c brown shades James A. Garfield] This is the Scott-listed "brown" color of this stamp; not yellow brown or gray brown. Mint, original gum, heavy hinge remnant, with VF centering, but with a corner crease (only visible from the back). The "blind" perforation tooth on the right side is a variety, not a defect. Wonderful appearance with great color. Philatelic trivia: This memorial stamp was intended to be issued in black, as was the Lincoln memorial stamp, but when the design was shown to Mrs. Garfield, she rejected the black color in favor of brown. A handsome example of a stamp that is scarce in Mint condition, at a very reasonable price. Undervalued, in my opinion, in Mint condition. (Scott 2025 $240.)

Scott #205 [1882 5c brown James A. Garfield] This is the Scott-listed "brown" color of this stamp; not yellow brown or gray brown. Mint, no gum, with Fine+ centering, but with a pulled perforation at bottom right. Nice overall appearance and great color. Philatelic trivia: This memorial stamp was intended to be issued in black, as was the Lincoln memorial stamp, but when the design was shown to Mrs. Garfield, she rejected the black color in favor of brown. Very low price. A "workhorse" stamp that is surprisingly hard to find (and is undervalued, in my opinion) in Mint condition. (Scott 2024 value $90 without gum [and $240 with gum].)

Scott #205 [1882 5c brown James A. Garfield] This is the Scott-listed "yellow brown" color of this stamp. Used with Average centering and extremely light cancellation (the previous collector had thought the stamp was "Mint without gum"). Right margin example, with natural straight edge on right, from the top row of the left sheet, with full arrow showing at top left corner. The "only Average" centering is necessary for this example to so nicely show the arrow!Printed in sheets of 200 and divided into two side-by-side panes of 100 (10 x 10) by cutting, resulting in natural straight edges. There is an arrow in the top and bottom margin that is very close to the top or bottom of the stamp design, thus at least the tip of the arrow is usually visible on stamps in those positions. A tiny vertical guideline extends only 2 mm from the tip of the arrow. Examples with a large portion of the arrow are more unusual and in high demand. There are SHEET margins at left and right, resulting in PANE margins at left OR right, the other side of the pane being a straight-edge. Only a maximum of four stamps, and usually only two stamps, out of each 200-stamp printer SHEET can show PARTS of the arrow position. However, a maximum of one stamp out of 200 can show the complete respective (top or bottom) arrow; usually NO stamps out of 200 show the complete arrow. Only 20 stamps out of every 200-stamp printer SHEET had the natural straight edge; 10 on the right side of the left 100-stamp PANE and 10 on the left side of the right 100-stamp PANE. Examples with the straight edge on right or left are now hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many -- at least of Mint stamps -- have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). In the case of Used stamps with straight edges of this otherwise-inexpensive issue, many (most?) were discarded by collectors before their relative scarcity was understood. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Philatelic trivia: This memorial stamp was intended to be issued in black, as was the Lincoln memorial stamp, but when the design was shown to Mrs. Garfield, she rejected the black color in favor of brown. A very interesting example, showing the top arrow about as complete as is possible on a single stamp.

Scott #206 [1881 1c gray blue Franklin] Used with F-VF centering and a very unusual 6-line machine cancellation. Because most uses of this stamp were for circulars and printed matter: a) Most uses of city/town-name cancels are in larger cities and towns, not in small towns; b) cancellations on that type of mail were specifically NOT supposed to be dated; c) uses in smaller towns were usually struck with some sort of mute (no town name) cancellation. We have no way of knowing if this example was used on a printed matter item or whether there were additional stamps to pay the full letter rate, however, machine cancellations are both early and very unusual on this stamp. Scott #207 [1881 3c blue green Washington] HORIZONTAL PAIR, Mint with F-VF centering. This is "never hinged" but with gum disturbances so priced as hinged. There is a small toned spot in the central margin, the right stamp has a tiny inclusion speck in the top margin, and there is very slight gum creasing. Scott #158 and/or 184 and/or 207 UNSORTED by catalog number [1873 / 1879 / 1881 3c green Washington] Used GROUP OF 56 stamps with VARIOUS COLOR SHADES and CANCELLATIONS. This is an unsorted group, and while it does not appear to include any grilled issues, they have not all been checked by me. The centering ranges from Average to VF and the quality ranges from great to with-defects only seen on the reverse. There are several with JUMBO margins. In general, most look nice from the front. While the range of color shades is nice, the real attraction is the range of cancellations. I see many different designs of carved cancellations including bars, crosses, reverse text (including "B", "2", and a couple others), fancy geometrics (including one in blue), etc. There are also different styles of target cancels and a couple manuscript cancels. There are also several nice examples of letters and numerals in barred-ovals (collecting as many different of these as possible is a lot of fun). Just the raw catalog value for the stamps is somewhere between $44 and $56, but some of the cancellations would sell for a few dollars each. And, who know, you might find a grilled stamp in the group. This group could be the start of a new and very interesting and fun collection for you!
