Scott #156 Grayish Ultramarine [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Mint with XF appearance. Full original gum, but two heavy hinge remnants. Almost perfect perforations, almost perfect centering, very pleasing and delicate color on white paper. It would be very hard to find a nicer looking (from the front side) example. (Scott 2022 $200.)

Scott #156 Grayish Ultramarine [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Extremely thin paper. Used JUMBO-SIZED stamp -- 4 mm taller than usual -- from the bottom row of the sheet, though with only Average centering. Extremely light cancellation, but one short perf and a previous owner handstamped the catalog number on the reverse (does not show through to front). Exceptional for its size and appearance.

Scott #156 Bright Ultramarine [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Used with Average centering. The postmark appears to be BROWN COLOR (Scott value +$20 if brown). Bright color and fresh appearance, with light, face-free cancellation. Natural left straight edge. This is left-margin stamp of the right pane. The Continental issues were printed in a sheet of 200 divided by cutting into two panes (left and right). I think that collecting straight-edge and arrow positions of this issue is quite challenging and rewarding.

Scott #157 [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Mint (NEVER HINGED) with full original gum but faint hint of a fingerprint on the gum. Fine+ centering. This is the brown color shade and has an extremely crisp and detailed engraving impression. The clear impression clearly shows (under 10x magnification) the seldom-visible secret mark (per Scott). Excellent perforations for this stamp. Though the stamp does not have a hinge mark, the faint fingerprint on the gum precludes it from being valued as a NH example -- however, note that in this early period Scott does not even attempt to list a price for NH. Wonderfully fresh; such nice quality is hard to find. (Scott 2022 value is $325 for Hinged.)

Scott #157 [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Mint, disturbed original gum from hinge removal, with Fine centering. This is the dark brown color shade strikingly intense color. One short perforation on left at top. A very attractive and fresh-looking example of a stamp that is quite scarce in Mint condition. Scott #157a DOUBLE PAPER VARIETY [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Used with Average-Fine centering and very light cancellation, but with typical (for this fragile variety) quality problems: two small thins, and minor creasing. A previous owner has folded back the top layer at the lower right corner (as shown in the illustration) to demonstrate that the stamp paper is composed of two layers of extremely thin paper. While a U.S. classics specialist might have seen many of these over the years, this is the first example of this variety that I have had in 48 years. Despite the modest Scott value for Used, this is an extremely scarce stamp -- the value is probably suppressed by the quality problems typical for this stamp and the unusual nature of the variety (and because it does not have a space in any pre-printed stamp albums). An very reasonable example of a very scarce stamp! (Scott 2022 value $200.)

Scott #165 [1873 (1874) 30c gray black Alexander Hamilton, Continental Banknote printing] Mint, with VF centering. Accompanied by a 2002 Philatelic Foundation certificate that states "165 ... It is genuine previously hinged with redistributed part O.G. [original gum] over a light horizontal crease at bottom." The certificate image of the stamps shows a not-mentioned weakness of the lower right corner perforation; that tooth has since separated and thus the lower right corner is slightly rounded. The mentioned light crease is not visible from the front and is even difficult to see from the back. The appearance of the gum is slightly disturbed, but within the normal range of what sees on this issue. (If you wish to yourself obtain a new certificate, of course I guarantee the stamp to be as I have described it. If the new certificate gives a lower opinion, upon return to me of the stamp and the new certificate, I will provide a full refund and pay for the new certificate.) A beautifully printed example with great color and extremely detailed and crisp engraving. This is a very scarce stamp in Mint condition. (Scott 2021 value with gum is $3750.)

Scott #165 Gray Black [1873 (1874) 30c gray black Alexander Hamilton, Continental Banknote printing] Used with VF centering with neat vertical barred oval numeric (16) cancellation. Natural right straight edge with just a couple "microscopic" tears in that right margin (typical). This is right-margin stamp of the left pane. The Continental issues were printed in a sheet of 200 divided by cutting into two panes (left and right). I think that collecting straight-edge and arrow positions of this issue is quite challenging and rewarding. Great centering, great color, great overall appearance. No other defects of any other kind. Seldom seen so nice, even though reperforated. (Scott 2022 Gray Black value $140, without taking into account that only 10% of the stamps printed had this right straight edge feature.)
