Scott #323 [1904 1c green Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Livingston] Used with F-VF centering, but one perforation at bottom missing. Right margin example with natural straight edge at left (the vertical guideline on the adjacent stamp), from the right column of the left pane of 50 from the printer sheet of 100. 10 stamps out of every 100 stamps (10%) originally had this feature at left and 10 stamps at right, but many of those that survived have since been discarded or reperforated. (This issue also has a horizontal guideline (perforated) across the center, between rows 5 and 6. All the guidelines terminate in the sheet margins with an arrow.) I believe collecting such stamps (which have become scarce over time due to being discarded or being reperforated) could be a challenging and enjoyable endeavor. This is not a scarce stamp, but it can be hard to find the position pieces such as this. ACTUAL item. |

Scott #324 [1904 2c carmine Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Jefferson] Mint with Fine centering, moderately hinged. Natural right straight edge example just barely showing the vertical guideline (cutting line) under magnification. This is from the right side of the left pane. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheet of 100 was vertically divided, with a center straight edge, into left and right panes of 50. Because the top and bottom of the sheets/panes had selvage, there are no corner straight edge positions for this stamp. The printer sheet had a horizontal guideline between the 5th and 6th rows, as well as down the center along the straight edge. 10 stamps of 100 had a natural straight edge at the right (from the left pane) and another 10 at left (from the right pane). Despite this respective 10% of production, examples with a right or left straight edge are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Mint examples with the straight edge on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find! ACTUAL item. |

Scott #324 SET OF TWO [1904 2c carmine Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Jefferson] Two stamps, two different color shades, Used F-VF, but one stamp with one missing perf. Set of two lower and upper horizontal guideline examples. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheet of 100 was vertically divided, with a center straight edge, into left and right panes of 50. Because the top and bottom of the sheets/panes had selvage, there are no corner straight edge positions for this stamp. The printer sheet had a horizontal guideline between the 5th and 6th rows, as well as down the center along the straight edge. 8 stamps of 100 had a guideline at top and another 8 at bottom, with no straight edge at the side -- despite this 8% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find. Note that normally these horizontal guideline examples have to be only F-VF centered (or less well centered) in order to clearly show the full guideline. VF or better centered stamps usually have the perforations through the guideline often making it hard to see. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Used examples showing the guideline on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find! ACTUAL item. |
