ESSAY (REVENUE USE) 2 cent Bank Check: Henry Lowenberg Decalcomania essay, Turner #42b dark green (Scott does not list the essays for revenue stamps). [ca. 1865-1866 Henry Lowenberg essay; (Lowenberg Stamp [printing] Company. The design, which includes the text "U.S. Internal Revenue", was created by Lowenberg and printed in reverse on the back of extremely thin onionskin paper. Based on two patents: gum and then print, and print and then gum, but Scott states that the difference cannot be determined without destroying the essay -- which is the whole point of this type of essay to eliminate re-use of stamps.] Mint NH Fine perforated single. Variable perforations as usual and with some relatively minor flaking causing design loss in a couple spots. (This example seems to show that the printing was on top of the gum; however, the gum was thick and irregular on this example, causing the ink to not fully adhere to the gum.) From time to time, a few examples can be found in the market in the $35 range.
