Scott #523 [1918 $2 orange-red and black Franklin] Mint, original gum, lightly hinged, with VF centering. A very attractive example with even margins and unusually nice appearance. Such nice examples are quite hard to find. Interestingly, when the $2 #523 was issued, it had an orange-red frame. Later when the $2 #547 was issued, it had a carmine to dark carmine color (and it also exists in an even-darker lake color). At first collectors thought that the carmine color must be a color error. The post office responded that the #547 stamp had always been that color (i.e. originally #523). However, when confronted with the evidence to the contrary, the post office said that the original orange-red color (#523) was an unintended color (i.e. an ink color selection error). (Scott 2026 value is $500.)

Scott #523 [1918 $2 orange-red and black Franklin] Used with F-VF centering and typical parcel or registered mail cancellation, but with a facial scrape and thin in the lower right corner. With a "FRB / NY" PERFIN, which I interpret as the Federal Reserve Bank in New York -- that goes along with the typical use on registered mail, probably sending packages of currency. Despite the defect, this is still a reasonable-looking example. (Scott 2026 value is $240.)

Scott #524 Deep Green [1918 $5 green and black Franklin] Mint, original gum, extremely lightly hinged, with VF-XF centering. The hinging is so light that the previous owner was sure it was NH. A wonderfully fresh example with large margins, intense color, "perfect" perforations, and "pristine" original, lightly hinged gum. An outstanding example of a stamp that is quite hard to find with such nice centering and freshness. (Scott 2025 graded value for VF-XF/85 is $200.)

Scott #524 Deep Green [1918 $5 green and black Franklin] Mint, original gum, moderately hinged, with VF-XF centering. In my opinion, the centering is actually XF, however, because this example has smaller than typical margins (which can vary in size), I have called it VF-XF. A beautiful example with intense color, excellent perforations, great overall appearance. This stamp is quite hard to find with such nice centering. (Scott 2025 graded value for VF-XF/85 is $200.)

Scott #524 Yellow Green or Light Green [1918 $5 green and black Franklin] Mint, original gum, lightly hinged, with F-VF++ centering. The color of this example is a bit of a puzzle: The color of is "original" (not altered), and could be called either Yellow Green or Light Green. The normal Scott listing is for Deep Green (this is not remotely Deep Green!), but Scott also has an UNPRICED listing for Yellow Green. On the Internet, I have seen some color shades of this issue that also do not appear to be Deep Green, but the color fidelity of random stamp images, from many sources, is not trustworthy. However, I have never seen a confirmed example of the Yellow Green to which Scott refers. This may be a more valuable color shade, but I have priced it the same as the usual Deep Green of this centering and appearance. A very bright and attractive example of a stamp that is quite hard to find with nice centering and freshness. (Scott 2026 value is $170 for the normal color.)

U.S. Scott #528 [1920 2c Washington Offset Type Va] Used with F-VF centering and partial ca.1920 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS Charlotte Amalie town cancellation. This stamp was issued in 1920, thus there is no doubt that the use is after the 1917 sale of the Danish West Indies to the U.S.Straight edge at right. Stamp from the right column of left pane of the printer 400-sheet. If this sheet had guidelines, it is not visible on this stamp. Originally only 18 of every 400 stamps could have had this feature. #528 (Plate Type Va) was printed in sheet sizes of 400 and 1600.Scott #525-536, the 1918-1920 Offset Printings, were printed in sheets of 400 and/or 800 and/or 1600, depending upon the Scott number and the plate number. (The Scott U.S. Specialized lists which sheet sizes were printed for each Scott number, located above #525.) I believe (but I have not seen examples or pictures) that the 800- and 1600-sheets contained replications of the 400-sheet layout, repeating the marginal characteristics of the 400-sheets. The 400-sheets were divided by cutting (thus natural straight edges) into panes of 100. On at least some of the issues, the cutting was along vertical and horizontal center guidelines which were terminated by arrows in the margins, however the arrows were normally too far from the edge of the stamp designs for an arrow tip to show in a stamp margin of a normally perforated stamp. Based on my limited observations, the marginal arrows are always present in the sheet layouts, but the guidelines may not be present on all issues or plates. Examples with straight edges on one of the four sides (left or right or top or bottom) each originally represented 18 out 400 stamps printed or each 4.5% of the issue quantity, but far fewer remain extant today. The positions in the printer sheet with corner straight edges each originally represented 1 out of 400 stamps printed or each 0.25% of the issue quantity; today examples are very scarce. (Many straight edge single stamps were used for postage instead of being saved in collections; furthermore Used single examples with straight edges were often discarded instead of going into collections. In some cases, for stamps "with value", the straight edges may have been removed by reperforating. As a result, today straight edge examples can be hard to find.) I think that collecting the different straight edge and guideline positions and multiples is quite challenging and rewarding. Attractive example; such canceled stamps are seldom offered.

Scott #547 Dark Carmine [1920 $2 carmine and black Franklin] NEVER HINGED, original gum, with VF centering. This example, falls somewhere in between Carmine (#547) and the darker, scarcer, more costly in Mint or NH condition, Lake color (#547a). Though some may classify this stamp as the darker Lake color, I have chosen to classify it as a Dark Carmine shade. A wonderfully fresh example with deep color, "perfect" perforations, and "pristine" original gum. Guideline at bottom. Stamp from row 5 of the sheet; from one of columns 1-4 or 7-10. Originally only 8 of 100 stamps could have had this feature.Scott #423-524 and 547, the 1918-1920 Franklin $2 and $5 values, were printed in sheets of 100, with vertical and horizontal center guidelines which were terminated by arrows in the margins, however the arrows are too far from the edge of the stamp designs for an arrow tip to show in a stamp margin of a normally perforated stamp. Collectible positions include guideline singles (all four sides), vertical and horizontal pairs with guideline between, and the center-of-sheet 4-block with crossing guidelines (very scarce). These stamps did not have any natural straight edges. Examples with guidelines on one of the four sides (left or right or top or bottom) each originally represented 8 out 100 stamps printed or each 8% of the issue quantity, but far fewer remain extant today. (Many guideline single stamps were used for postage instead of being saved in collections; furthermore Used single examples with guidelines were often discarded instead of going into collections. In some cases, on Mint and Used stamps, the guidelines may have been removed by reperforating. As a result, today guideline examples can be hard to find.) I think that collecting the different guideline positions and multiples is quite challenging and rewarding. Interestingly, when the $2 #523 was issued, it had an orange-red frame. Later when this $2 #547 was issued, it had a carmine to dark carmine color (and it also exists in an even-darker lake color). At first collectors thought that the carmine color must be a color error. The post office responded that the #547 stamp had always been that color (i.e. originally #523). Most of these stamps were used on heavily canceled parcels or registered mail packages. However, when confronted with the evidence to the contrary, the post office said that the original orange-red color (#523) was an unintended color (i.e. an ink color selection error). (Scott 2026 value $40.)

Scott #547a [1920 $2 LAKE and black Franklin] Used with Average-Fine centering, but with a couple blunted perforation teeth. This has a remarkably light cancellation for this issue. Most of these stamps were used on heavily canceled parcels or registered mail packages. Interestingly, when the $2 #523 was issued, it had an orange-red frame. Scott #547a [1920 $2 LAKE and black Franklin] Used with Average-Fine centering. An excellent example of the LAKE COLOR -- a color which many collectors and dealers have difficulty identifying. This example has a remarkably light cancellation for this issue. Most of these stamps were used on heavily canceled parcels or registered mail packages. Interestingly, when the $2 #523 was issued, it had an orange-red frame. Later when this $2 #547 was issued, it had a carmine to dark carmine color (and it also exists in this even-darker lake color). Scott #548 [1909 1c green Pilgrim Tercentenary, Mayflower Ship] NEVER HINGED with VF-XF centering and large margins. Though this is not a "scarce" stamp, NH examples with centering this nice can be very hard to find. Extremely fresh, with strong color and very crisp engraved impression. An excellent example! (Scott 2015 graded value for NH VF-XF/85 is $14, but is harder to find than that value suggests.)

Scott #548 [1909 1c green Pilgrim Tercentenary, Mayflower Ship] NEVER HINGED with Average centering. Guideline and natural straight edge at right, from the right column of a left pane. The guideline is well on the stamp; in order for this extreme positioning to occur the stamp must have only Average centering!Scott #548-550 were printed in sheets of 280, divided by cutting along guidelines into four panes of 70, consisting of 7 columns and 10 rows. The cutting often seems to have been done on one side or the other of the guideline, resulting in many straight edge examples bearing 100% of the guideline and its mate from the adjacent pane bearing no guideline. The guidelines terminate in arrows in the outer perforated pane margins; arrow-margin examples are hard to find. Including the 4 corner positions at the center of the 280-sheet, 20 stamps out of every 280-sheet had the natural straight edge and guideline at the right (and same for at left). Including the 4 corner positions at the center of the 280-sheet, 14 stamps out of every 280-sheet had the natural straight edge and guideline at the top (and same for at bottom). Examples with a one straight edge, or corner straight edges, are now hard to find and mostly come from old collections. (Most straight edge and guideline stamps were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge.) Examples with the straight edge and guideline are surprisingly hard to find! I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. An attractive example showing extreme positioning -- such are seldom offered.
