Scott #579 [1923 2c carmine Washington, COIL WASTE, Perf 11 x 10] Top Margin (the only possible position) PLATE BLOCK OF FOUR plus two stamps on the right, Plate # (star) 14289, which confirms that it is Scott #579 coil waste (end pieces of rotary press web perforated into sheets instead of made into coil rolls). The stamp adjacent to the plate number has a hard-to-see crease through the extreme upper right corner. Mint hinged, but upper left and lower right stamps are NH; of the four hinged stamps one has remnant but the other three are lightly hinged. The top left corner of the selvage is slightly shortened as is often the case. The top margin is always this size because it is the edge of the paper/web. Centering is Average-Fine and is typical for this issue, however, but that gives the added benefit of showing the ENTIRE JOIN LINE on the left side of the plate block. The Scott definition of a plate block of this issue is only four stamps, but I have left this as a six-block because it looks nice (the "extra" stamps at right are: upper LH [Scott 2024 $70] and lower NH [Scott 2024 $140]). [Scott 2024 value for the hinged plate block OF FOUR is $550; those four single stamps (one of which is NH) have a Scott 2024 value of $350; the additional two stamps on the right (one of which is NH) add another $210 of Scott value.] If you only want the plate block OF FOUR, it may be possible for me to remove the right two stamps and offer the plate-4-block at a slightly lower price.

Scott lists Green, Yellow Green, and Pale Green -- this Pale Dull Green may be the color that the editors intended for the Pale Green listing but does not look like a standard Green, and it is different from another Scott-not-mentioned Dark Dull Green color. Though this color is certainly less often seen, this is one of the regularly encountered colors and should be included in a collection that shows the normal range of colors for this stamp. The pale-ness of the color is not only caused by the ink color, but the engraving of this example (particularly in the hair) is much shallower than usual. (In the stamps of at least one other country, this example would be described as a "pale head variety" because of the shallow engraving.) Unusually large margins all around, with extraordinarily nice centering. Really outstanding "perfect" perforations for a Perf 10 stamp. Wonderful color and freshness -- remarkably attractive. All the colors of Scott #581 are remarkably hard to find with such nice centering. (Scott 2026 graded value is $20 for XF/90 for the most common color -- this is a scarcer color!)

I do not know (and I am not guaranteeing) that this example will grade as Superb/98, but it is an extremely nice-looking example of a stamp that is usually found in only Fine or F-VF centering. Excellent perforations for a Perf 10 stamp. Four very large margins with extremely nice centering for this stamp. Incredible color and fresh appearance. (Scott 2026 graded Hinged value is $14 for XF-Superb/95 and $30 for Superb/98.) Of course you should decide what you think of this stamp, but must be the nicest looking Mint Hinged example I have had in 52 years.

Large-margined example, extremely fresh and bright with crisp, detailed engraving. Extraordinarily well-centered and large-margined for this issue. Certainly one of the nicest examples I have had in 50 years! I am offering this and guaranteeing this as XF-Superb/95, but you might be able to achieve a higher grade for it. Scott #610 [1923 2c black President Harding Memorial, Flat Plate, Perforation 11] NEVER HINGED with Fine centering. Horizontal pair with guidelines and natural straight edges at bottom and right, from the lower right corner of the upper left pane. Scott #610-611 (Black Harding, Flat Plate) were printed in sheets of 400, divided by cutting along guidelines into four panes of 100, consisting of 10 columns and 10 rows. The guidelines terminate in arrows in the outer perforated pane margins; arrow-margin examples are hard to find. Including the 4 corner positions at the center of the 400-sheet, 20 stamps out of every 400-sheet had the natural straight edge and guideline at the right (and same for at left). Including the 4 corner positions at the center of the 400-sheet, 20 stamps out of every 400-sheet had the natural straight edge and guideline at the top (and same for at bottom). Examples with a one straight edge, or corner straight edges, are now hard to find and mostly come from old collections. (Of the #610 perforated issue, most straight edge and guideline stamps were used for postage rather than going into collections.) Examples with the straight edge and guideline are surprisingly hard to find! I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Very fresh and attractive. Examples of the corner positions are rarely offered. Only one out of 400 stamps has these corner-stamp features and most have been lost or destroyed.
