Scott #183 Light Orange [1879 2c vermilion Jackson, American Banknote Printing, Soft Paper] Mint with F-VF centering, but with hinge remnants and only partial gum remaining. Looks great! An attractive example at a very low price. (Scott 2023 $100.)

Scott #183 Clear Orange [1879 2c vermilion Jackson, American Banknote Printing, Soft Paper] Mint with Fine centering, but regummed. The paper is unusually white. The regumming makes it difficult to determine, but I believe this to be the lower-priced #183 Soft Paper, but it could be the higher-priced #178 Hard Paper. An attractive example at a very low price. (Scott 2023 $100.)

Scott #184 [1879 3c green Washington, American Banknote printing] Mint, original gum , with VF centering. Three well balanced large margins, plus an oversized margin at top. Wonderfully fresh appearance with great color, excellent perforations, and very crisp, detailed engraving. Accompanied by a 2003 PSE certificate. (If you wish to yourself obtain a new certificate, of course I guarantee the stamp to be as described. If the new certificate gives a lower opinion, upon return to me of the stamp and the new certificate, I will provide a full refund and pay for the new certificate.) Though not a scarce stamp, mint examples this nice are not often seen these days. (Scott 2021 value $90.)

Scott #184 [1879 3c green Washington, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Used with XF centering and very faint purple cancel. Almost looks Mint. Wonderful appearance with great perforations and crisp engraving impression. Though not a "scarce" stamp, examples this nice are not very often seen. (Scott 2023 for VF-XF/85 is $15 and for XF-90 is $55.)

Scott #186 [1879 6c pink Lincoln, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Used with XF centering and very light cancellation. This is what I call a "no excuses" stamp -- it is nothing but the best! While this is not a "scarce" stamp, examples with such nice centering and overall appearance are quite hard to find, as demonstrated by the Scott 2023 value for XF/90 at $100.

Scott #186 [1879 6c pink Lincoln, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] HORIZONTAL PAIR, Used with F-VF centering. Neat "blob" cancels that leave the front of Lincolns head cancel-free. The left stamp has a faint lower left corner crease and the right stamp has one short perforation at bottom. However, any multiples of this stamp are quite hard to find in perfect condition. Collecting multiples of this design or this broader issue would be an exciting challenge. (Scott 2021 value $50 for a pair.)

Scott #186 [1879 6c pink Lincoln, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Used with F-VF centering, but with faint and inconsequential thin speck. Outstanding VF++ "A" IN REVERSED COLOR (A is white, background black) SQUARE cancellation. Such nicely canceled examples of this stamp are hard to find, but since it is a light-colored stamp it is very suitable for collecting cancellations -- it would be a fun challenge to build a set of alphabetical cancellations on this stamp!

Scott #188 [1879 (1878) 10c brown Jefferson, With Secret Mark, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Used with VF centering and fairly light cancellation. The secret mark is faint, but it is there. This is an attractive example of a stamp that is not "scarce", but which can be hard to find with nice centering. (Scott 2023 $30.)

Scott #189 Red Orange [1879 15c orange Webster, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Mint with XF or better centering. Gum is original, but is somewhat disturbed and there is a tiny ink spot on the gum (does NOT show through to front). There is a tiny natural inclusion on the right side of the base of the bust; this is typical for the grayish paper that was used for this 15 cent stamp. Wonderful appearance with brilliant color. This stamp is very scarce, especially Mint, with such nice centering. (Scott 2023 for XF/90 is $425.)

Scott #182-204: 1879 American Bank Note Company Issue continued ...
Scott #189 Yellow Orange [1879 15c orange Webster, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Mint with F-VF centering. Tiny pinhole in lower right corner (this is how early dealers displayed their best stamps). The gum does appear to be original, but is somewhat disturbed, and there is a very faint natural crease in the lower right quadrant. The left and maybe the bottom have perhaps been reperforated (which is what I am assuming and how I have priced it), or at least the perf holes have been cleaned out. Despite all that, this is a fresh looking and very reasonable appearing example of a scarce early stamp. (Scott 2023 $180.)

Scott #189 Yellow Orange [1879 15c orange Webster, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Used with Fine centering and bright color. Manuscript cancellation in the form of a remarkable vertical column of three "X". I have not previously seen a cancellation quite like this. Scott 2023 is $27.50 for a normal Used example, but this is quite exceptional.

Scott #189 Yellow Orange [1879 15c orange Webster, American Bank Note, Soft Paper] Used with F-VF centering, but probable filled thin and creased lower left corner. Exceptional double-line OVAL cancellation from "....SPORT / PENNA." Pennsylvania, with the numeral "3" in the center. To my knowledge, this was a unique style of local town cancellation. Given the cancellation, the minor quality problems of the stamp can be easily overlooked. Wonderfully fresh and bright example. Scott 2023 is $27.50 for a normal Used example, but this is quite exceptional.

Scott #190 [1879 30c black Alexander Hamilton, American Banknote printing] The "full black" color of this stamp is one of the features that distinguishes it from the Continental Banknote printing. Mint, original gum, with VF-XF centering, but with light horizontal crease at top (hidden under the top frame line. The light crease is not visible from the front and is very hard to see from the back. Wonderful, crisp appearance with very detailed engraving. Accompanied by a 2001 PSE certificate. (If you wish to yourself obtain a new certificate, of course I guarantee the stamp to be as described. If the new certificate gives a lower opinion, upon return to me of the stamp and the new certificate, I will provide a full refund and pay for the new certificate.) A very pretty example of a stamp that is scarce in mint condition. (Scott 2021 value $850.)
